Sunday’s Agenda

Let It Be Sunday, 81!

Let It Be Sunday!

Cut the grass out back.  Fill the pot hole out front.  Clean the bathroom inside. Fold the laundry. Eat tacos as reward. Call your sister, say hey. That’s my Sunday. What’s yours?

Reading. As we do:

•  Let’s all read this because it is poetic and important. The Middle of Things: advice for young writers

•  You Throw, Girl: An Olympic Shot Putter’s Feminist Mission. Go on at get it! (And wear lipstick, too.)

•  David Simon, creator of “Homicide: Life on the Streets” and “The Wire” on Baltimore’s Anguish. We still talk about those shows because they are still some of the best television around, and David Simon is a thoughtful mind in our world.

•  Weekend trip!  Let’s go, right?  Where to Hang in Nashville for 24-48 Hours.

•  The words ‘local’, ‘sustainable’, and ‘organic’… they’re buzzy and we can think of them without really thinking about them.  For New Orleans bread baker, Graison Gill they are the foundation of his bread bakery in this city and that is noooo small task. He also makes, hands-down, the best loaves in the city thanks to passion, care, and his fresh stone-milled flour. Against The Grain: how New Orleans baker is making waves in Louisiana wheat

Women are crushing it at the Rio Olympics.  Enough about them… where would they be without their husbands?

•  This feels true, every word of it: What The Women From My Beginner’s Dance Class Definitely Said About Me After I Left

•  Let’s not forget that former talk show host Jenny Jones has a food blog and is killing the game, ok?

•  10 Things I Buy from Trader Joes For No-Cook Dinners from The Kitchn.  If  you have a Trader Joe’s near you, God bless you… go live your life.  How is New Orleans still without!?

•  Here’s a New Orleans End Of Summer Bucket List…. because you know I love a bucket list of any variety.  Let’s add to the list New Orleans Daiquiri Season, a month-long celebration this September featuring special events and daiquiri tastings around the city.  It’s sure to be a blast AND the Ace Hotel is offering a special rate when you use the code DAIQUIRI.  See what I’m doing?  Trying to get you to come visit and drink rum with me.

•  Every month King Arthur Flour is hosting an online baking gathering: Bakealong!  This month we made Pane Bianco… sorta like braided pizza bread.  It was as good as you’d imagine. Get in on it!

•  This week in Things You Should Cook: Red Grape and White Peach Tabbouleh Salad.

•  I watched the movie Room this weekend. I hope you see it, or read the book.

Ok! Have a wonderful day! What a blessing that we get to be in it!

  1. Thanks for the awesome reads!

Room is one of my fave books!! I’ve read it twice.???? And I finally watched the movie a month ago. Bri Larson and Jacob Trembley are sooo incredible in it. Absolutely perfect casting!

I’m currently reading Food and the City by Ina Yalof! It’s a behind-the-scenes look at New York’s food scene through the eyes of the city’s professional chefs, line cooks, food vendors, and purveyors. I love hearing about how the different people started their businesses, the trials they’ve faced, and how they overcome. I’m also making a list of all the eateries mentioned in the book!

Enjoy the rest of your week????

  2. My Sunday was a lovely one – in large part because I baked a raspberry/blueberry/strawberry pie using your trusty buttermilk crust (which, by the way, is always so good). We had a bunch of friends over and despite the heat, I’m very happy to have turned the oven up to 400 for some sweet berry pie!

  3. Wow, I thought it was bad that my small city (Springfield, IL) has no TJ’s. We have to stock up on our favorites during occasional trips to St. Louis. I’m in TJ-free solidarity with you.

  4. As it is the Lord’s day. I got up early, went to Mass & I am now relaxing with s good book. Sunday is always my day of rest.

  5. While both Oscar-worthy and worth watching, I think that recommendation for Room should come with a flashing red disclaimer. I was more than mildly traumatized by it. And, the feelings of “what if” horror lingered for days and days… and days. The thought of being locked in a room like that for years.. it’s 1,000 times worse than my worst nightmare.

  6. Oh, thank you for “The Middle of Things!” I really needed to read that right now, such sage advice that applies to more than just writing. On a completely different note, Trader Joe’s is opening in Metairie soon. Woo hoo! Alright, back to reading the rest of the list…

  7. Joy! I’m so sorry about your lack of Trader Joe’s :( I used to live in a place like that, then I moved to a magical place where there are two (TWO!) TJ’s within 5 miles of my house!! Do you need a TJ’s care package?

  8. Hi Joy, this isn’t related to your Sunday post, although I love them and start every Sunday morning off by reading them, but last night my sister and I made a peanut butter themed meal for my dad’s birthday since it’s his favorite food and we made your peanut butter cake and peanut butter cream cheese frosting. He loved it and didn’t even add more peanut butter as he always does… Anyway I just wanted to thank you so much for teaching me how to bake, especially pie, cake, and biscuits, I have made so many people so happy and created so many wonderful memories using your recipes.

    1. No! I am so late to this party, but as somebody who came back to dance after a 15 year lay-off, don’t feel this way! That was a terrible “article.” The women and men in my classes are so completely supportive of each other – many didn’t start dancing until they were in their 50’s or 60’s – and we are all amazing in our own ways.

And trust me, the type of person who would look at you that critically or take the time to talk about you behind your back is waaaaay too self-involved to even notice anyone in the mirror besides themselves.

  9. I read the book “room”, it was a strangely compelling novel – not sure I want to see the movie though. I am always disappointed when I see a movie after having read the book.
Busy day here in The Dordogne. Guests changeover in the guest house so I will be changing sheets, cleaning the house etc – all in 36 degree heat!
It is only 10:30am but I am already looking forward to that cold glass of rosé this evening!

    1. Nadia, I feel the same way about watching a movie after having read the book, I always feel like I’m setting myself up for disappointment. However I must say, Room was an incredible movie and it stayed true to the book. The actor that plays the little boy was amazing and truly made the movie. I would suggest giving it a try!
