Hello sweet friends and welcome to Sunday!
The Japanese magnolias are in bloom in New Orleans, making the city even that much more magical! I love these blooms.
I managed to tick every task off my to-do list this week and I’m rewarding myself with some very chill and restorative crafting this Sunday afternoon. I’m thinking something along the lines of this jean embroidery from Honestly WTF.
I’ve been thinking about those of you in that monster snow storm and I hope today finds you with light and heat and all the coffee and hot breakfast you need.
My Sunday offering follows:
โข We all have our blind spots but you can trust me when I tell you that I am very very smart and very very creative. (I’m 39% kidding, ok?) People Don’t Actually Know Themselves Very Well. (The Atlantic)
โข The nature of every day and every night as our circumstances and job markets change: America’s 24-hour daycare center: a visit in pictures. (The Guardian)
โข Let’s let this ring in our ears loud and clear, ok? The 4 Personality Traits That Keep You From Making More Money. (The Cut)
โข In this week’s workshop at The Bakehouse (yes, I’m always talking about this) I taught food photography for Instagram! Everyone in the class decorated and photographed these gems: Browned Butter Baked Doughnuts. I’ll tell ya what – we had a great time. (Joy the Baker)
โข I needed this information this week: Which Alcohols Should Be Refrigerated And Why. Thanks Food52!
โข What are you having for breakfast? Deb’s Parsley Pecorino Biscuits? (Smitten Kitchen)
โข It feels so so good to finish a weekend project. This Sunday I’m embroidering a pair of jeans (fingers crossed) and feeding the trees in my backyard. Keeping it simple. But! I love these ideas from Apartment Therapy for future weekends: 11 Mini Weekend Makeovers Anyone Can Pull Off On The Cheap.
โข Our girl Molly Yeh wrote a Short Stack book about Yogurt that I’m very excited about! Did I already tell you about this? Maybe so… well, I’m into it!
โข My friend Lauren is killing the game in these Nashville looks. (Eloquii)
โข I need to tell you something. I do two things on an airplane: cry and shop on Amazon. I DON’T KNOW – I JUST DO. This week’s plane travel air purchase was a a dry body brush. I think because I care very much about my lymphatic system? Just let me do this.
Have the most lovely Sunday!
xo Joy

A lot of times we read the same articles (which I consider a further hallmark of your good taste and wisdom), but this week you have unearthed treasures that are all new to me.
I’ve been making macarons, and while they aren’t stir-and-bake simple, they aren’t as fussy as I had feared. And I have a low threshold for fussy. I also learned new vocabulary.
Wonderful!
The blooms are beautifl!
I meant beautiful
Havenโt embroidered in forever! I just might do that to a pair of jeans for summer! Thanks for that! Loved the apartment therapy suggests, yesterday I changed out my kitchen hardware.
Thank you for introducing me to Short Stacks! You know how you buy those fancy Moleskines and plan to fill them with your recipes, but never get around to it? Now I can just buy some Short Stacks and eliminate some guilt.
I too โthinkโ I care very much about my lymphatic system since I have two different dry brushes??? Happy Sunday!
Hi Joy, Iโve followed you for years. Iโve 45 other posts in my inbox. On Sunday yours is the first I open. Thanks for exploring the web and bringing us stories, receipes, tips, crafts, and insights!
Hi, Joy the Baker! Greetings from Tel Aviv, Israel! Iโm standing here in Rivkaโs kitchen watching as she whips up a batch of Rugala for her daughterโs Mikvah tonight!
That article from The Cut was really eye-opening. I especially like the line at the end saying that women are often better advocates for other people than themselves. Maybe we can apply that in salary negotiations and interviews by just pretending we’re fighting for someone else. Interesting!

Gosh, the magnolia blooms always get me.
Oh my gosh, I cry on every airplane! I have all sorts of reasons (hello yogagirl podcasts), but mostly I think itโs the relative anonymity mixed with quality time in my own head, and also the reminder of my own mortality if things get bumpy. Iโve just stopped wearing makeup on flights and always make sure to pack tissues (and a scarf to hide behind if things get messy, ha).
The last time I embroidered on my jeans was in 1976…I put a P on one back pocket and an S on the other…for my boyfriend Paul and me, Shauneen. I thought it was very clever and know one would get it…P.S….they did and humiliation ensued! Last time I tried that…but good luck…Im sure it will work out for you! Love the posts.
Thank you for sharing those blossoms! Ahhh, spring time. Please send a little my way? Even in a month or two, would be nice…
It snowed about five more inches at my place today. No end in sight in the snowy white and cold North lands. It’s like Scandinavia without all the nice benefits. Speaking of, we have got to do something about supporting parents, mothers, children, in our country. That Guardian article made me sad (as did several of the linked articles from that one, all about how hard America is on parents/mothers/children), and as a person who has provided child care for a long time, it’s something I feel a lot. We must do better.
We have trees blooming here in mid-Calif. Cherry blossoms. Love how they look. But lots of snow in the mountains around Reno. Sun is shinning, but crisp. My week-end projects were a little more labor intensive but very rewarding. Cleaning out the book cases of books no longer needed or wanted. They will be off to Hospice tomorrow. Feeling very good about that.
We baked began brownies with “Pamela’s” mix. Very good, yum.
Thanks for the NO flowers.
First time, long time. Do you listen to Forever35? Two ladies who talk self-care and serums. And dry brushes one time. FYI!
Yes I love that podcast!
How have I never heard of Short Stack??? Is this something I should be obsessed with?? It kind of looks like it is…
We call Japanese magnolias “tulip trees” here in North Alabama. They’re one of the first signs of spring and one of my most favorite sights after long, cold, rainy winters.
I’m not sure if the dry brushing actually does anything, but it feels SO AMAZING.
I spent my Sunday (and Friday and Saturday too!) wandering around your lovely city! Wanted to say thanks for your NOLA posts, as they inspired me to take my mom to Turkey & The Wolf, Bywater Bakery, and Pizza Delicious, as well as walk the length of Crescent Park and explore the Bywater. It was all fantastic!
Oh that makes me so glad!
My good friend Deb (that’s how I like to think of her) definitely has a thing for pecorino. This delights me while preventing me from spending too too much $ on the good parmesan. I appreciate that you and her are both looking out for my cheese lovin’ heart!
Thanks for this beautifully written post. It miss visiting New Orleans. Thanks for bringing my New Orleans trip 2015 back.
