Let It Be Sunday, 209!

February 10, 2019 by Joy the Baker 17 Comments

Hello dear friends!

Wow – isn’t every Sunday a wonder? Making it to this day is an accomplishment, to be sure.

This week I feel like I’ve put my forehead down upon a broom stick and run myself in circles.  The current moment finds me a little dizzy from travel and car rental, and Waze following, and family visiting, and somehow working, and somehow chasing my dreams day in day out. Ya know?  I’m sure you do.  The minutia and the grandiose are certainly not mine alone.

What follows is most of the open tabs in my browser.  Things I’m reading through this week, things I’m day dreaming about, weird stuff, hopeful stuff, little puzzled of reality.  Take what you need and know that I’m out here wishing you well.

•  This might be some much needed perspective: What we don’t talk about when we talk about serial killers. (The Cut)

•  Important: The parking lot suicides. (Washington Post)

•  This week’s long long read is really something: The Circus Singer and the Godfather of Soul. (CNN)

•  I’m taking in a lot of baking enrichment this week.  I had the opportunity to watch Carla Hall make biscuits at Nochi (her book Carla Hall’s Soul Food is fantastic!).  I’m also taking a literal DREAM workshop with Tara (of Smoke Signals) and Christina (of Levee Baking Co.) here in New Orleans at the Mosquito Supper Club space.  I know this is a lot of information but the moral of the story is – wow let’s be sure to keep learning things!

•  Myths About Food A Majority Of People Believed 25 Years Ago.  Fat is not the enemy. I know you know.  (Digg)

•  Honestly, I love this:  The Sommeliers of Everything.  Someone please point me towards the sommelier of everything bagel seasoning, thank you. (Washington Post)

•  Brandi Carlile!  If you don’t know, now you know.  (Variety)

•  A question that crosses my mind more than I’d like it to:  what is anything?  The Lonely Life of a Yacht Influencer. (Mel Magazine)

•  Another pressing question answered:  Why Does Everyone Suddenly Have Fake Fancy Teeth? (The Atlantic)

•  Where there is no silverware and the accents drop like flies:  An Evening at Medieval Times. (Serious Eats)

•  In case you find yourself with a surplus of citrus and a blow torch:  Meyer Lemon Brulee Bars. (Joy the Baker)

•  Jon made the most lovely no-bake cheesecake for your Valentine’s Day consideration:  No-Bake Chocolate Covered Strawberry Cheesecake. (The Candid Appetite)

•  This week I ordered flowers from Farmgirl Flowers for my mom’s birthday and gosh they’re just beautiful flowers thoughtfully delivered.  If you need (and we all need to send flowers once in a while) – Farmgirl is the spot! (Farmgirl Flowers)

•  Always always interested in adding to my cast iron collection. (Kaufmann Mercantile)

Enjoy this fine day!

My love to you!

xo Joy

Joy, you come up with the best weekend roundup on the internet, every single week. Bravo. That serial killer piece, ugh. What I’ve been thinking about for awhile. Kind of disgusting how these monsters hold our fascination hostage.

Joy, thank you for bringing “Let It Be Sunday” to us…You have repeatedly over the years opened my eyes to so many wonderful things! Things I’d never in a million years discover on my own. How do you do it? Where do you find this stuff? I am not exactly recluse, but you column helps me explore the world so much more. Love, as always, Maris

I love Brandi Carlile! She was supposed to play at small venue in my hometown (in Saskatchewan) but she cancelled at the last minute-I was so sad. I was able to see her play with Pearl Jam in Seattle last summer though? I also tried your sisters ice when I was in Seattle- yum! Love your Sunday posts:)

Watching Brandi Carlile perform in a cave on PBS was what got me into her music–such a strong and beautiful musician https://www.pbs.org/video/brandi-carlile-wzdxvy/

My husband and I wonder, when watching TV, which people have real or “fake” teeth. It is strange to see so many people with blinding, dazzling teeth. They are just too expensive for the average person and you are really damaging your real teeth? Is it worth it?
I was happy to learn about Brandie Carlisle and look forward to more music from her.

Yes, it IS worth it. I had a not attractive smile (if that is possible, any smile is really beautiful). But I grew up very active trying to follow my brothers everywhere, do everything they did and chipped my front teeth doing some daredevil stunt. Badly! I had veneers put on about 17 years ago and my life changed…really! They are great. The only problem I have had is now my gums are retreating a little and I can feel, NOT see the edge, sometimes. I LOVE THEM! Also, I am not a wealthy person. But worked hard, had a great job and had some dental insurance assistance, not sure to what extent – quite some time ago. Also, go to a really great dentist. Makes a difference.

Karen, I’m not positive about veneers used today, but I got veneers way back in the late 80s. My front teeth were very badly damaged from fluoridosis (too much naturally occurring fluoride in the water where I was born). Enamel doesn’t form properly. It’s an ongoing problem for me. Anyway, many years later I needed the veneers replaced (they thin, gums recede leaving space at the top). Removing them left my teeth so badly damaged that the only replacement was crowns. So I’ve now got a mouthful of crowns. No easy choices for me unfortunately. Never in a million years would I do anything to my teeth that wasn’t absolutely necessary, but that’s just me.

Thanks for sharing the story on Brandi Carlile! I had no idea she was up for so many Grammys. I finally saw her live last summer and it was one of the best shows I’ve seen. She’s a true performer, great at interacting with the crowd.
