Friends, it’s Sunday! Feels good, doesn’t it?
How has your week been? I hope you’ve been vacationing – I feel like everyone has been vacationing.
This week, in the small work of living this life, I committed to eating the food from my fridge and pantry instead of grocery shopping. I have so much food in my pantry that I either don’t see or just ignore and instead of piling more food inside, I’ve cooked from the pantry all week. That means lots of lentils and canned beans, and I’ve pat myself on the back for using a jar of harissa I bought last year. Small stuff- I know.
I also happened to have chocolate chips in the pantry and you can guess how that went.
I hope you’re able to relax today. Take a few moments here. Here’s what I read this week, an offering:
• This won’t make you feel better about anything but I think you should read it anyway: A Haunting New Documentary About Anthony Bourdain (The New Yorker)
• I either meant to watch 20 Feet From Stardom when it came out or I sorely need a rewatch. Made by the same film maker as the Anthony Bourdain documentary, it’s a documentary about music’s greatest backup singers. Incidentally, being a backup singer is my dream career when I think of jobs that I’ll never get to do. (Amazon)
• This world is fascinating: The Dark Side of Chess (The New York Times)
• I loved reading this excerpt from my friend Amy’s memoir Let The Love Surprise You. I cried. My friend’s courage is even more than I knew. She’s also very funny. Also… BJ’s for goodness sake. (Catapult)
• I’m barely wearing any makeup these days but I still want to look fresh and glowy and honestly the humidity does half that work for me. I’ve also got these Luminizing Glow Drops on order. And I just ordered this glowy sunscreen to put on top of this mega Vitamin C serum and I like it all! (Versed)
• I think it’s time to pull out this ice cream maker. This is my ice cream maker – it’s self freezing (and pricey, I know – you have to make really want ice cream) which I think makes a big difference in homemade ice cream. I’m thinking I’ll make a batch of cookies and cream and a batch of Blueberry Cheesecake Ice Cream. (Williams Sonoma and Joy the Baker)
• I’m a sucker for brownie mix (I shamefully like a mix better than for scratch brownies) and these gluten-free and allergy friendly Brownies from Partake are, friends – SO GOOD! (Partake)
• We’re looking forward to a busy autumn at The Bakehouse. We’ll be adding classes to the schedule for the next month, but if you want to peek at the classes we have so far the list of classes is here for you. (Eventbrite)
• This week last year. Let It Be Sunday, 281! (Joy the Baker)
Have a wonderful day, friends. Thanks for being here with me.
My love to you.
xo Joy

Thanks for sharing a beautiful recipe!
We got an ice cream maker as a wedding gift, and I’ve been looking for more homemade recipes! Fruit + cheesecake ice cream is my absolute favorite combo.
Thank you for sharing the story of your friend. I grew up in the church and it is still a part of my life but, more so, my faith. I am not gay but I have close friends that their children have come out. My views on gays has certainly been tested and my opinion has definitely changed. I wonder how God feels when He sees His people react unkindly to people that grew up in the church like Amy and choose a lifestyle that they may not agree with. We should not judge although it is easy to do. We are called to love even those that are not like us.
Great round up this week! I too am getting ready with tissues to watch the newest Bourdain documentary. He’s one of my husband’s favorite culinary personality and inspiration. Really helps open up the conversation of mental health and support. Plus, the music documentary is on my watch list. I also dreamed of being a backup singer and look for them when attending concerts or viewing live online videos. They really bring so much to a performance, round out a song and are such an important core piece to music entertainment. Plus, plus I use a Cuisinart ice cream maker also linked in above comment.
There is a middle ground Cuisinart electric ice cream maker, $99.00, works GREAT and makes 2 quarts of ice cream, sorbet or gelato. :-).
Oh, and regarding using what is in your pantry? I am going through the same thing here, as I stocked up for Armageddon or whatever possible time of hardship. Like you, I have chocolate chips! But hey, it is our duty to rotate food!
I can enthusiastically recommend 20 Feet from Stardom! I liked it so much I bought it and watch it maybe once a year. Darlene Love has an incredibly powerful voice and Lisa Fischer is a genius with her voice. The back up singers are so underappreciated. Great documentary! ??
Just curious because a few if your links take you to websites that require membership to read……are you aware of this? It’s kind of frustrating.
Can you send me the chocolate chip cookie recipe? Looks so good!
I bought the ice cream maker attachment for my Kitchen Aid and have had decent results. I haven’t been using it much lately but used to store the bowl in my freezer with bags of frozen fruitv inside to save space. I have nowhere to store another countertop appliance, so integrating with something I already owned made the most sense for me–and it wasn’t too terribly expensive.
I have this attachment too and have gotten good results from it also. I have it for the same reason you do – didn’t want another large appliance to store. I’m able to keep it in our basement freezer, so that helps. The best ice creams I’ve made with it are from the Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream at Home cookbook. Those seem to turn out great in it. (The goat cheese and roasted cherry is a favorite and was a huge hit with friends.)
another kitchenaid ice cream attachment lover here! I’ve made lots of recipes from Joy’s Homemade Decadence – whether it’s peanut butter or cream cheese or egg yolk custards they all have come out with a nice rich consistency. The only trouble I’ve had is recipes that omit enough fat, or if I forget the splash of alcohol at the end to prevent over-freezing
I have the Kitchenaid ice cream maker also. I get good results also! Joy the Baker chocolate Peanut butter ice cream is my absolute favorite to make. Jeni’s book is my second go to.
My ice cream maker is awful, but there has to be a middle ground between that and spending a car payment on an ice cream maker. #stilllooking
I’ve had this Cuisinart ice cream maker for 10+ years and love it. It makes 2 quarts which is plenty for 99% of the time I make ice cream. I just keep the bowl in my freezer year round. https://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/cuisinart-stainless-steel-electric-ice-cream-maker/?pkey=cice%20cream%20maker
There is a middle ground. Cuisinart electric, $99 last I looked, and works GREAT! Makes 2 qts. of ice cream, sorbet or gelato. We love ours!
Speaking of using up the pantry etc., look for #chefhannacooks on Instagram. She’s up to 81 days of not buying food! (Using up, growing, trading only.) So inspiring!
Good Sunday morning, Joy! I hope you had a relaxing weekend.
It’s kind of daunting to think where we were this time last year. Progress
I LOVE ice cream. I am going to save my pennies for the ice cream maker you have. I honestly would eat it year round; even wrapped up in a blanket during the winter.
Thank you for showing up for us. Appreciation.
