Let It Be Sunday, 378!

Hello, friends!

What are you eating and drinking to stay cool when going outside is like entering a furnace? As I type this, my fingers are buzzing from iced coffee and my fingertips are stained crimson from cherry consumption. It looks like my 4-year-old gave me a French manicure. Who knows? Maybe this’ll be the next TikTok beauty trend! Sunday’s offerings are below and stay cool out there.

Xo,
Toby

If I had to put my money on one alpha male podcast, it’d be the pop culture pod How Long Gone. The hosts remind me of the dudes I hung out with in college but lost touch with, and they have great chemistry together. (How Long Gone)

Joy’s herby egg salad on English muffins was a hit in our house. To cut down on time, I skipped the pickled onions and put diced onions on top for an extra crunch. (Joy the Baker)

What are you watching these days? Never thought I’d say this, but I could actually use a new show. The Bear looks intriguing. (Hulu/FX)

  1. What varied topics this Sunday! Thanks Toby. The Time article about teen gender fluidity movement and advocacy is fascinating. I 2nd the comfort of Abeo sandals. Also Baretrapes. Realized I need a skin balm for sandals to decrease chaffing, blisters and any feet sweat or swelling. (Goldbond Friction Defense stick) Also still looking for comfy walking/trail show that’s casual styled.
If I could be besties with either Mila Kunis or Ted Allen I’d be laughing and well fed all the time.

  2. Toby,
The essay by Aubrey Hirsch was absolutely haunting. I think I held my breath the entire time reading it. My goodness the power of words.Thank you for sharing this. I will be passing it along to family and friends.
On a lighter note, enjoy your trip to New York City sans the 3 kids; how exciting for you. As for a celebrity bestie, I don’t think you can improve on Maya Rudolph.

    1. Thank you so much, Stella! And, yes, that essay was almost too dark for our Sunday but then I figured that was kind of the point.

  3. My favorite sandals are Chaco. My daughter recommended them to me after I broke my ankle and decided all my shoes were going to need good arch support afterwards. They are made for hiking and the support is excellent. The straps are completely adjustable and their website has video on how to do that to customize them for your feet. I also like shoes by Abeo for their support and the fact that they have different insoles depending on how what your feet need. But in all honesty, if I am going to be on my feet for an extremely long time I stick with my Brooks running shoes. (Even thought I am not a runner and just a walker.) The truth is I will take comfort and support over looks.

    1. Thanks, Susan, I’m going to look into those! And, yes, I’m a long time devotee of Brooks for actual exercise…maybe I should just stick with those to be safe :)

  4. Thanks for the great offerings, Toby! If you want to consider a walking sandal I recommend the ECCO Yucatan. I’m on my fourth pair and have worn them almost every day and walked thousands of miles. Guilty of wearing them with socks in the winter! Have a great trip!

    1. I love the idea of counting the miles a shoe accumulates. I mean… Nike probably has an app for this… and that makes the idea less romantic but you know what I mean. :)

  5. Best shoes I’ve ever worn were incredibly expensive, so expensive I duck taped them together when they finally started falling apart after years of use. The brand is Finn Comfort Shoes. They cured a painful heel problem. A lady in my gym class was prescribed them from her foot doctor. The BMW of shoes.

  6. Something to watch: “Mind Over Murder” on HBO, Nanfu Wang’s new docuseries. One episode in, it is gripping, and you know something much bigger is unfolding.

  7. Outstanding compilation and variety of reads. I want to start right now on every single one! Thanks Toby!

  8. Wow, thank you for linking to Caity Weaver’s mother’s obituary. Don’t miss the thread that follows, where she retweets more of her mother’s past antics. My thoughts are with her family who have clearly lost a one of a kind woman. <3

  9. That sandwich you have posted looks absolutely delicious. When the heat is brutal inside and out, I usually eat ice cream and drink my kombucha more often. It is really thirst quenching and is good for the gut. I still enjoy baking even in the heat since eating is usually what you are in the mood for at the time. I just made homemade pizza this past Friday since it is good anytime and you can put any toppings on it you want. I also like making a macaroni salad which incorporates many garden vegetables and I usually make it in warm weather rather than cold weather. The egg salad sandwich you show has vegetables on it which is something I should consider next time I look to make an egg salad sandwich. thank you.

    1. Ah pizza is too ambitious for me but I’m all about the mega pasta salads that are packed with veggies. I make a big one in the morning then put it in the fridge, forget about it all day then magically have dinner appear :)
