A Humble Offering

I come to you this Sunday with the little bit that I’ve got. This week was expensive – not in money, but certainly in energy.ย  I think I left most of my energy in the waiting room of various doctor’s appointments and along the 10 freeway between New Orleans and Houston.

The 10.ย  That’s what people from California call the highway that runs east and west across the southern United States.ย  Whenever I add the The, it reveals my California roots.ย  That highway (and every other) is jam packed enough for the respect of a capital T and yes, that’s where I’ve left most of my brainpower.

I’m happy we’re here together, friends.ย  Thanks for taking exactly what I have to give. If you find yourself with a few extra moments this fine day, throw on a full album as suggested below.ย  It’s a Sunday kind of thing.

โ€ขย  I just. I need you to read this. ย I Don’t Need My Life to Be Remarkable (New York Times)

โ€ขย  Itโ€™s cuffing season.ย  Get yourself a little creature with bean-padded paws: The Case for Catsย  (The Atlantic)

โ€ขย  This will shortly be a full fledged recipe on foodnetwork.com but let’s not take it too seriously – mix your candy corn and peanuts directly on the counter. Stand, stare, and snack and enjoy: a case for candy corn and peanuts (and an undeniable dad dance). (Instagram)

โ€ขย  I’ve been listening to albums start to finish the past month. This season feels like a good time for Nebraska.ย  After all these years I think I’ve forgotten to tell you what a crush I’ve always had on Bruce Springsteen.ย  (Spotify)

โ€ขย  I just checked the calendar and it’s time to bake Ina Garten’s best apple recipe: Ina’s Apple Pie Bars. I only say this because I made a batch this week and was reminded how simple and delicious they are.ย  They’re pictured above if you need further nudging.ย  (Joy the Baker)

โ€ขย  In podcasts this week I’ve listened to these Ologies episodes on Geology so I can keep up with Will, a geologist. Also had my mindset expanded with this episode of You’re Wrong About on Online Shopping with Amanda Mull. (Ologies and Apple Podcasts)

โ€ขย  I’m currently reading All Good People Here by Ashley Flowers. It’s a bubble gum murder mystery written by the host of true crime podcast Crime Junkie. I recommend as a book to fall asleep on top of. (Amazon)

Have an easy Sunday, friends.

My love to you!

xo Joy

  1. I tried to buy the magazine from you and it said the store couldn’t accept real orders or real payments??
The article about enjoying the 4’s and 6’s in life really got me. Thank you. I love your Sunday offerings. I hope you have a better week.

  2. Same here, I wanted to buy signed copies for my son and I and the shop said it could not accept real payments. When I tried the link from the email it worked but not signed copies, just the plain ones. Oh well.

  3. I was so excited about a signed copy and little messages. How fun would that be?! Sadly, I got the same, not so fun message.

    1. For all having trouble paying with ShopPay for a signed copy of Joyโ€™s holiday magazine, I was able to purchase it via Google Pay using my credit card. I hope that helps some!

  4. Thank you for recommending the article by Sarah Wildman. I am going to be certain to appreciate the 4’s and 6’s in my life, not just the 10’s. And some days a 1 or 2 will be great.

  5. Joy, can you help a sister out? Unable to purchase your magazine because the site will not accept payment information.

  6. Joy Iโ€™ve loved you since the early days of the blog. Then you said you ate pickles out of the jar with the fridge door open. And now you say you love my man Bruce? If I wasnโ€™t a happily married grandpa and you werenโ€™t in a relationship and basically my kids age Iโ€™d be thinking about moving to Houston ?. Be well.

    1. Crime Junkie is one of my favorites! But I havenโ€™t gotten Ashleyโ€™s book yetโ€ฆ what am I waiting for?! Thank you for that cat article- as a cat person, I 100% concur.

  7. I was super excited about a signed copy and little messages too, but sadly received the same message, ” This store can’t accept real orders or real payments”. What do I do? Thank You, Nancy

    1. Hi Nancy! I’m so sorry you’re having trouble checking out. One of our readers, Laura. commented that she checked out via Google Pay and it let her enter her credit card details there. I hope that works for you!!

  8. ‘The 10’ definitely says you are from So Cal. The reason it’s ‘the’ 10, 134, 101 is that they actually had names-134 The Ventura Freeway for example. I’m in Northern Ca now (lived in LA all of my childhood). Up here they don’t use ‘the’ before the freeway (and we know that someone is from So Cal when they do). Interestingly, when I go down to So Cal, ‘the’ becomes prominent in my freeway speech.

    1. Wow. I grew up in Northern CA and I think you might be the frist person I’ve heard of whom doesn’t use a “The” in front of the freeway/highway name. When moving to the PNW I found people saying “I” for interstate then the #. Ex: Interstate 84 where we would just say I84. PNW drivers are odd anyways. Which is fine yet we still grammatically say ‘the’ with the interstate name. Agreed the 1 and 101 are classic and given their proper names. Heck, we even use “the” for massive Boulevards Ex: The El Camino or The El, is my hilarious favorite. It is “the the street” Stay funny California!

  9. Same message. Would love to purchase when the issue is Resolved. Thanks for all your beautiful words and recipes each week.

  10. I tried what Laura suggested and used Google Pay option to put in my credit card and it worked! It kept showing the same error message in checkout if I tried to use the regular option even through today. Hope this helps everyone who was trying to get an order in since yesterday like me!

  11. So many recent life events made the first article (I don’t need my life to be remarkable) resonate deeply. This past weekend, a distant relative died of cancer at 20 years old. Her grace and spirit though her multi-year ordeal were amazing and touched so many. Thank you for sharing the link.

  12. Yes, my friend, welcome to Houston where you get on I-10, not โ€œthe 10โ€.

    Houston rundown:
I-10, Baytown or East fwy, Katy fwy
    59, eastex or southwest fwy
    45, gulf freeway, north freeway
    The beltway, Sam Houston tollway-8
    288, south freeway
    610, the loop
    99, grand parkway
    Westpark

    Thereโ€™s a good start. :)
