Hello friends!
Howโs your summer going? Last week, I took the kids to a birthday party at a country club, where they decided they wanted to jump off the high dive. Ever the supportive mother, I parked myself in a lounge chair to take videos. Well, one of my kids chickened out and didnโt want to jump until MOM did.ย
So, determined to bottle my fear of heights, I cut a group of twerpy 6th graders in lineโeven though they towered over meโand climbed up the ladder, walked the plank, then hesitated two seconds before jumping in and feeling the cold water shoot through every crevice of my body. It was awesome.ย
Naturally, thereโs a greater metaphor to be made here about mustering all your courage and plunging into the unknown with both feet. But we can unpack that another time. Letโs get into the Sunday links!
Xo,
Toby
โข Even though I grew up in Nashville listening to Waylon and all the classic country greats, Iโve never truly been into country music. That is, until this summer. I went through a Judds* phaseโbecause, womenโthen I was introduced to this banger and started wearing cutoff shorts with bathing suit tops as shirts โcause it just felt right. Next, my friend who works in the industry clued me into some seriously top shelf music by Tyler Childers. And now Iโm all country all the time. (YouTube)
*I donโt recommend trying to sing this at karaoke night. Iโve never bombed so hard. (But donโt you love the old concert footage without everyone holding iPhones in the air?)
โข Product rec: I gave this to a friend for her birthday because sheโs always complimented how I smelled when we went in for a hug. I started wearing it years ago after asking the shop girl for her sexiest perfume. Donโt gatekeep your beauty secrets! (Sephora)
โข One of my book club besties recommended a Mel Robbins podcast episode, โThe Let Them Theory,โ which was super-relevant to my โbossyโ personality. She describes going from being a control freak to letting the current of whatโs happening take you in a different direction. Preach. (Apple Podcasts)
โข What are you watching these days? I blew through Am I Being Unreasonable, which is funny and dark in a Fleabag + I Hate Susie kind of way. Plus, the female friendship carries on the Dead to Me vibe. (Hulu)ย
โข Think Iโm going to watch The Perfect Find this weekend. Will report back. (Netflix)
โข My oldest son is obsessed with Zelda and has been plugged into Tears of the Kingdom all summer, which I never related to until reading this brilliant essay from Amber Sparks. (The Audacity)
โข When Joy gifted me this charming cherry necklace, I passed it down to my daughter because she loves it. She was over the moon and I love this companyโs product descriptions + overall mission. (Delicacies)ย
โข I am not a pet person โ sorry, sorry โ so I appreciated Anne Marie Tendlerโs tribute to her pup, Petunia, because it helped me empathize with all my friends who have cats & dogs. (Elle)ย
โข Have you seen Past Lives? Itโs a stunning film Iโve worked into every conversation this month. I couldnโt help but Google Teo Yoo, whoโs big on the K-drama circuit, and omg. (Twitter)
โข I couldnโt click on Jia Tolentinoโs profile of Olivia Rodrigo fast enough. (Vogue)
โข “As Bugs Bunny knew, gender is theater, whatever else it is.” โ the fabulous Alexander Chee on drag culture. (Harper’s Bazaar)
โข The summer reading list is my favorite post of the year, and you can find it here. A few of those books arenโt released yet but you can check out last summerโs since those are all available at your local library. Happy reading! (Joy the Baker)
โข Joan Didionโs writing has been hitting hard for me lately โ okay, fine, sheโs had this effect my entire life โ and I hope youโll pause today to read On Self-Respect. (Vogue)
โข My house was experiencing a hot dog hangover after the holiday weekend so I made Joyโs Easy Watermelon Feta and Cucumber Salad. Easy is the key word here but, mainly, this salad always feels so crisp and fresh when itโs a million degrees outside. (Joy the Baker)ย
โข Finally, the only person who can get me to read 8,121 words on David Foster Wallace in 2023 is Patricia Lockwood. (London Review of Books)ย

Ah I don’t know why my question posted as a reply I’m trying again.
What is the product that smells so good? It could be because Iโm not in the US but the link just takes me to the Sephora site, not a specific product.
It’s Libre, an eau de parfum from YSL! The link is working on my end but I’ll link it here for you!
Thanks:)
Hi Toby,
I just had the opportunity to see Past Lives and loved the film. It is best described as a meditation on love and life. Itโs a beautiful film; deeply moving and felt so very real.
The star of The Perfect Find is Gina Torres. Curious to hear your thoughts after you’ve seen it.
You’re not like a regular mom, you’re a COOL, POOL mom!
The absolute truth!
Thanks for this, Toby! I also canโt stop thinking about Past Lives. I might need to see it again. Canโt wait to delve into this reading list. Passing the Jia Tolentino article along to my friend whose dog is named Jia (after her, of course).
Just saw Past Lives this evening. So so good! One of those movies where you just sit through the credits kind of stunned.

I usually donโt post comments and up to this point have liked ever post that youโve written. However, Iโm flummoxed by the link to a Morgan Wallen song, and quite frankly, shocked that anyone is listening to his music (which a bunch of people are). Iโm still reeling from the video of him stumbling home drunk in Nashville and shouting out the โnโ word. To me he symbolizes all that is wrong with country music and its perpetuation of racism. As a fellow (and long term) Nashvillian-Iโm disappointed that you would link a song in your post and show support to Morgan Wallen.
I’m glad we chatted this through over email MaryBeth. It was just something we didn’t know until after the post was published.
All apologies. Iโm totally out of the country loop and didnโt know about the Wallen news. Xo Toby
Thank you MaryBeth for your thoughtful message. It matters!
If you liked Am I Being Unreasonable check out Rain Dogs. Itโs on Max and also stars Daisy May Cooper.
