I’ve seen a meme going around lately that says “It takes a special kind of person to wake up early and still be late” which unfortunately, calls me out completely.
We’re headed to Arkansas for a weeklong vacation this weekend and I felt confident (if not bleary eyed) waking up at 4:45 in the morning to prep myself, the animals, and the house for my departure. Despite my very best efforts, I still ended up an hour late for our departure time. HOW!? I mean, I did suddenly decide to mop the floors when I still needed to pack my bags but… well, I guess that explains it. It’s embarrassing, really. Rude, some might say.
I did just Google the psychology of late people and I’m either passive aggressive or optimistic. Obviously I’m leaning towards the latter.
I hate this about myself and yet, I’m not sure it’s changing anytime soon. My apologies are just going to have to get more creative. At least I brought lunch?
Here are some easy summer Sunday links. I hope this finds you happy, well, hydrated, and punctual.
• We can be real about The Vexing Problem of the Medium Friend. I thrive in the medium friend space – I think distinctly because I’m not pushy about time. Let me be your best medium friend (there are cookies!). (NYT)
• We’re nearing the time of year when only watermelon is considered lunch. This Snap Pea Watermelon and Edamame Salad is my favorite way to make watermelon a meal. I recently made this for a little friend and family barbecue, and, to be honest, it was a medium success. Kids don’t know what to do with the combination of watermelon, green vegetables, and sesame. Fair. (Joy the Baker)
• I am known to read summer beach reads all year long so Toby’s 2024 Summer Reading List will get me through the year. I’m starting with Housemates. (Joy the Baker, Bookshop)
• Fine-haired cohorts listen to me – we need scalp sunscreen. This Sun Bum is my fave. (Amazon)
• I absolutely loved this Ode to Humidity. I’ve come to love a thick, sweaty summer and honestly, my skin has never looked better. (NYT)
• New Orleans really does tap you on the shoulder and choose you. It’s nearly Essence Fest in the Crescent City – here’s A Love Letter To New Orleans. (Essence)
• Do Less, It’s Good For You. You don’t have to tell me twice. JK, you absolutely have to tell me more than twice. I’m not listening, somehow. (Time)
• I must report that I’ve been obsessed with this white and dark chocolate covered frozen fruit from TruFru. They’re like little bonbons. A perfect summer dessert. A bag doesn’t last more than two days in my freezer. If you’re strolling through the frozen aisle and spot these GET THEM. (TruFru)
• Timothy shared this old Judy Collins album with me. It might very well be the soundtrack to my Texas Era. Who Knows Where The Time Goes. (Spotify)
• Okay to this cowboy caviar meets pasta salad! We really should be adding beans to pasta salad more often. (The Kitchn)
• Did you see that our friend Karlee started a dirty soda food truck in Oregon? We love it. (Instagram)
Have a lovely Sunday, friends!
My love to you.

Annie
Thanks for the album rec! I needed something like this today! I swear I was musically born in the wrong era!

Can so identify with the wake up early/still be late thing.
HAppened just this morning…woke up early to bake a breakfast treat to be shared with my neighbors. Had a time in my head to get it made and when it would be finished. Somehow, I was half an hour off my schedule. Have no clue what I did with the time.
Enjoy your vaca…I am guess only Grahm and not Tron will be heading off in the truck.
Joy the Baker
Literally where does that time go!? It’s such a mystery.

Hah! I love and have all of Collins’ albums, but that one is a fav and happens to be what is on my turntable right now!
Joy the Baker
What I’m hearing is, I need to be on the lookout for the vinyl!
Late arrival
I thankfully work in a pretty lax office, but without fail, I never make it in before or even at 9 am. I roll in at exactly 9:07 most days. Dunno how or why. I could wake up at 5:30 or 8 am, and I’m still pulling into the parking lot at 9:07. ? I try not to beat myself up about it, but it is frustrating.
Joy the Baker
Hahhahaha – I understand this completely.
Rachel
Oh gosh I love that album. My mom has this album and I grew up listening to it. Always made me wonder about my mom’s past. I’m going to sit in my Adirondack chair and listen to it right now in the muggy heat. ??
Joy the Baker
I love that for you Rachel! And yes – wouldn’t it have been amazing to be our mom’s friend when they were growing up?

Dog: “I’ll give her two more minutes and then I’m starting this truck my own self.”
Joy the Baker
Hahhaha! I jokingly describe Graham as a “Guy’s Guy” because he’s really interested in hanging out with men, especially in garages working on cars so I feel like he could absolutely start the truck, and maybe even change the oil.

Oh gosh! I’m the same, wake up early and still be late to get on the road, the dentist or the farmers market! I’ll read that article you linked but I suspect I’m just more optimistic! Thank you for your Sunday reads, they really help me start a great week! ??
Joy the Baker
We’re just optimists, that’s all! :)
