I’m thankful for this weekend. I walked to the farmer’s market to get tomatoes and peaches while the gettin’ is still good, found a still-warm crusty loaf of bread to compliment the produce, and treated myself to fresh chèvre and farm eggs. They feel like little treasures… and I’m going to eat them all.
This week felt so FULL, right? A lot of feels to feel. Take a moment to acknowledge all of the things we need to process in a week: what’s for breakfast and what the heck is for dinner, what’s going on with Jay-Z and BeyBey, how should my brain work out what’s going down in Ferguson, how did I manage to run out of coffee, why is a four-year-old eating at The French Laundry, I want that sweater, I want that lipstick, I want to know why people are so horrible, I’m not brave but James Foley was, where is my wallet, I can’t find my phone, I recognize that person from somewhere, why am I yawning so much, laundry, blog, family, email email email, coffee, WEEKEND. I mean… it’s A LOT.
Here’s what’s on my mind, in the world, and on the Internet this week:
• Syria is the most dangerous place in the world for journalists. We have learned this all too well this week but we’ve known. We’ve really known: Evaporated. We know how James Foley died, but this is how he LIVED.
• In a place where saying what you mean can be very, very dangerous, these unmasked men stand behind words they believe. A Syrian town’s tribute to James Foley.
• 17 Things About ISIS and Iraq You Really Need To Know. They are among THE WORST and that’s the understatement of the year.
• “I Wear This Uniform and I Should Stand Up Here and Tell You I’m Sorry.” We might never be done talking about what happen in Ferguson until things like this stop happening.
• “For more than a decade, it was Michelle Lyon’s job to observe the final moments of death row inmates – but watching 287 executions did not come without a cost.” The Witness.
• It’s super weird to be The Last Generation To Remember Life Before The Internet. One word: encyclopedias.
• I’m on a budget and I don’t like it. I love it. I hate it. I love it. Mint.com is surprisingly easy to set up and it’s a game changer when it comes to being a grown-up and taking control of your dollars.
• “If I always had clarity, why would I need faith?” How To Make a Decision.
• How You Got Hooked On Coffee. We’re all just little habit machines.
• Speaking of our coffee habits… I’ve treated myself to a monthly Tonx Coffee Subscription and I LOVE it!
• Shichimi Togarashi Caramel Corn. Huh and YUM! Japanese seven spice mix meets sweet popcorn!
• Rules For Dining Out by Bon Appetit.
• A Four Year Old Reviews The French Laundry. Don’t forget… we have better taste than four-year-olds (though we may not be as cute).
• Power Couples on Twitter and Instagram. Alternate title: We’re The Butt of a Cosmic Joke.
• Communication: The Real Reason We Yawn.
Enjoy your Sunday! It’s a good one!

Thank you for posting such thought provoking articles. Really powerful in so many ways. I appreciate your balance between the light hearted and the things that require time to reflect on.
I have been loving your Let It Be Sunday posts, and this one was a beauty.
Thank you for keeping it real and touching on these important things in our world, and for keeping it light right alongside that because we are nothing if not complicated and busy folks and it is just so wonderful to read a post that captures all that (with a lot of heart and good thought and talk of sweaters and yawning).

I really enjoy seeing these posts in my feed. It’s like getting permission that it’s okay to just chill out with a cup of coffee and a book for awhile. Thanks. :)
Joy: These Sunday posts are just lovely. Thank you for your fresh perspective and ever-enjoyable blog. I always look forward to catching up on it. Enjoy your week! xo.
Joy, do you have any tips for getting a reservation at French Laundry? I am flying to the area in October for vacation and it truly seems impossible.
It’s so unfair that a four-year-old got to go to French Laundry. And that she’s way cuter.
Thanks for sharing in so many ways the same feelings we are all experiencing during this tough time. Thanks for the James Foley piece, too…..Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
Joy! This week has felt SO full and I have felt so disheartened at the unkindness of people (all the while, somehow I am still looking at lipsticks. Nars if you want to know). Thanks for posting these links and being a kindred and I love Let it Be Sundays. xo
Joy, I love your blog and all the beauty you share. And I especially love that you mention important things happening around the world. Thank you for sharing the link about how James Foley lived.
New(ish) reader here. Thanks so much for the link to The Witness. It was a really well-done piece that I appreciated!
I really look forward to your Let it Be Sunday posts. I truly appreciate the combination of silly things, yummy things, and important worldly things. What a good reminder to allow ourselves time to laugh and enjoy life’s pleasures without ever forgetting the hardships people are facing in our country and around the world. It’s a scary time, but with people like you using your voice for good as well as entertainment, it makes the scary stuff just a bit easier to swallow.
It has been a heavy week. You are so right. I went to the beach in the rain this weekend, just to look at a horizon. It made me feel a lot lighter.
Also, so glad you like my caramel corn! I would send you a sweet spicy truckload, if I could. Actually, that would be too much. Let’s say, a large tubful.
love the window into your busy mind. did you find the apples at the FM too? i was excited to see that some early varieties are already ready out here, though i went for the heirloom pears instead to give the rest of the apples a few more weeks to ripen…
I love these round ups. Every link is a gem. Thank you for making them – they are something I always look forward to!
Love these posts. Thanks for making them, and making me think. It’s a struggle to lead a life with balance and meaning, but it’s worth it.
My favorite post of the week! Thanks for the round up, Joy!
I’m pretty sure you and Tracy are a Twitter/Instagram power couple ;)
Thanks for posting this, it’s really good to know someone else is feeling all the feelings about all the things too.
Your week sounds a lot like my week – and the one coming up! Isn’t life crazy (busy, non-stop, insane, etc…)? I love your link on how James Foley lived. People like James are true inspirations and the ones that change the world.
Thanks for mentioning things that are going on right now. I really appreciate when bloggers and others take the time to acknowledge real problems like Ferguson and Syria. So many people ignore these things because they are really, really hard to process and to think through, but that’s why it’s extra important to give yourself some space to do so. Recognizing that what’s happening in Ferguson IS a real, structural problem is the first step to change.
That article about the French Laundry is absolutely hysterical and that little girl is adorable. Also…kind of ridonk how small the portions were but I guess it’s a tasting menu?
Your right there is a lot to think about. Everyone said the world would end in 2012. It didn’t but what ended was the world as it use to be. Yes, everything is changing and changing fast. So we listen to the news, we digest within our minds what we can change and yes pray for the things we cannot. People get so offended with words from others and there just words, its whats in our hearts, its what we can do as an individual to try and help with situations. So as think about the last week that was so full another week is coming. Take a deep breath, look at the good not just the bad and hopefully it may even out eventually. Make a peach cobbler, I need a good recipe. Have a great Sunday and a beautiful week ahead this post was a Joy to read. I do ramble on hope it makes sense. Paulette
Thanks for sharing so many links with meaning… Some really good reads!
Thanks for the links. A lot has happened in the past week… have a great weekend!
Wow, the last generation to remember life before the internet? That’s scary! Thanks for the links and have a great weekend.
The hubs and I ALWAYS choose eating at the BAR when we go out! It’s so true, the service is great as well as the conversation! WINNING!!!!!!!!
Oh my that second paragraph is my head every single day. Glad I am not alone.
Thanks for all the links! Especially the one about how James Foley lived!

Your week is real, and it sounds a lot like my week too.
In other news, you’ve made me remember I used to have an Encyclopaedia Britannica on my computer, that I could search. It was not connected to the internet, which existed but was not something people used for anything other than work and chat rooms at the time. Updates to the Encyclopaedia came on a floppy disk.
