Let It Be Sunday, 320!

Happy Sunday, friends!

Another week gone by – how did you spend it?

I told you that I would ice dye and I’m a woman of my word. I made this wild pair of pants last weekend and I’ll say, if you’re at all curious, it’s such a fun process!  We’re going to host a virtual Bakehouse workshop about it in June so keep your eyes peeled.

I’m in Texas this weekend for a bit of time away with Will.  It feels like just now my work year is starting to pick up. I know it’s May but it feels like the freeze we’ve been in is just starting to thaw.  I welcome the work, of course… but first a little barbecue and motorcycle riding with Will.

I hope this finds you well with a day full of possibilities ahead of you.  The offering the week is below. As always, take only what you need.

โ€ข  This is a few years old but I still think about it often: Crying In H Mart. (The New Yorker)

โ€ข  This week’s long read is inspired by my fascination of bank robberies and jail breaks.  I’m not a rule breaker but I’m fascinated by stories of them:  The Secret of the World’s Greatest Jail Break Artist. (GQ)

โ€ข  I love what Kim Rhodes writes for Cup of Jo:  Making Peace With My Quarantine Body (Cup of Jo)

โ€ข  There is some really powerful advise here.  I’m keeping this tab open in my computer forever, hahahha. I’m not even kidding.  5 Lessons I’ve Learned About Confidence As A Career Coach (Cupcakes and Cashmere)

โ€ข  I run with Coach Bennet and the Nike Run Club app in my ears a few times a week and it’s so positive and encouraging that it’s really turned me into a person who enjoys running. I saved these thoughts when I saw them on Instagram: Coach Chris Bennett on staying positive.(Instagram)

โ€ข  Our friend Ellen Bennet’s new book is out and I’m about to dive in. She shares the nitty gritty of starting her apron company and while the title stresses me out bit (details, tho!!), I’m here for the truth of it all:  Dream First, Details Later by Ellen Marie Bennett (Hedley & Bennett)

โ€ข  Please listen to the latest season of Kim Baldwin’s Ladyland Podcast.  There are two really thoughtful conversations up right now.  I especially enjoyed listening to Destiny Birdsong talk about life and writing.  I think you’ll enjoy these episodes as much as I did. (Ladyland.show)

โ€ข  I was recently internet mesmerized by Mississippi Vegan’s Skillet Okra on YouTube.

โ€ข  A very important list:  The Best Pizza In Every State. And I get to humbly brag that I live down the road from the best pizza in Louisiana, amen. (Food and Wine, Pizza Delicious)

โ€ข  If I could implore you to make any recipe this weekend, it would be this Baklava Granola.  (Joy the Baker)

โ€ข  Current daydream: Peach Ice Cream. (Texas Monthly)

โ€ข  The most beautiful food flower and words from Jessica B Harris. (Instagram)

Have the most lovely Sunday, friends!

My love to you.

xo Joy

  1. oh my goodness those PANTS!!! sooo beautiful! nice work. also…i’m so behind. Who is this Will character? =D don’t worry, i’ll work my way back. xoxo

  2. I made that granola and it is divine. Thank you for the recipe. And since I have to be gluten free, it’s good that I was able to eat at Pepi’s in New Haven repeatedly before the gluten thing really geared up. Because now it can live only in my imagination.

  3. While I haven;t travelled extensively throughout the US, I have had the privilege of enjoying pizza at Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix and also at Micucci’s and Pizza by Alex in Maine(Maine is right next door to us geographically speaking) and can vouch for both of them. Be sure to ask for your pizza to be done in the old oven at Pizza by Alex.

  4. Joy! Thank you so much for sharing so much every Sunday. I always look forward to your links. This week, the Nike Run Club Ap – I downloaded it and I LOVE it. I am so happy!

  5. The pants turned out splendidly! I thought I only liked okra fried until I tried pan sautรฉing it last year. So good, I ate it at least once a week while the garden held out.

  6. โ€œCrying in H Martโ€ by Michelle Zauner is now in full memoir form. Iโ€™m right smack dab in the middle of it and itโ€™s absolutely extraordinary! Michelle expands on the New Yorker piece and has drawn me in with her descriptions of her motherโ€™s deep love via food. Fully relatable. I highly recommend.

  7. Wow Joy, each and every one of these HIT this week, thank you! Texas sounds divine, enjoy it!

  8. Happy Sunday! I love the pants, Joy! I am preparing for my daughterโ€™s college graduation and I am excited for it all…last year this time, I was in a place that felt like uncertainty busting out the seams…however, we made it and for that, I am grateful! One of my favorite songs is by Bob Marley titled โ€œThree Little Birdsโ€…today let these lyrics permeate your spirit!

    Rise up this mornin’
    Smile with the risin’ sun
    Three little birds
    Pitched by my doorstep
    Singin’ sweet songs
    Of melodies pure and true
Sayin’, “This is my message to you, whoo-hoo”

Singin’, don’t worry, about a thing
‘Cause every little thing, is gonna be all right
Singin’, don’t worry, don’t worry ’bout a thing
‘Cause every little thing, gonna be all right
