Negroni Sbagliato

This classic Italian cocktail mistakes gin for bubbly prosecco making it a lighter and playfully bubbly Negroni Sbagliato. Cheers, friends!
Two glasses of Negroni Sbagliato on a marble countertop.

There was a time in the early 2000’s when all the It Girlies were drinking bourbon and smoking cigars? Do you remember this? Am I calling myself out?  All of us raised on the Leo and Claire version of Romeo and Juliet were like…. love is tragic, we’re going to need a stiff drink about it.  I feel like these were the early days of dating apps when it was a real and true Pick Me vibe to be a girl that drank bourbon without even so much as an ice cube, neat and tidy.

Negronis have had a similar moment in the past five years and wait… is this a hot take?  It’s a trendy badge of honor to order this classic bitter Italian drink from an entire specialty menu of other Negroni variations.  Thank you TikTok. It’s giving cough syrup at happy hour and I sure have been known to siddle up and place my order.

Bottles lined up to make a negroni sbagliato

Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make a Negroni Sbagliato:

•  Sweet red vermouth

•  Campari

•  Prosecco or sparkling wine

• orange wedge or orange peel for garnish

•  ice

•  rocks glasses

A classic negroni is so pleasing, especially for home cocktails, because of its proportions.  It’s as easy as pouring equal parts sweet red vermouth, Campari and prosecco (instead of gin).  “Sbagliato” translates to mistake so we’ll mistake prosecco for gin in our glasses.

Stir the vermouth and Campari and add a large ice cube (or any sort really) to the glass.  Top with prosecco.

Now… proportions call for a small amount of sparkly prosecco but I like to buck proportions and fill the glass.  Garnish with an orange peel and sit back into the lovely moment you’ve created.

For a group, you can batch this cocktail fairly easily!  I like to mix together several cocktails worth of Campari and sweet red vermouth in a jar and set it on the bar with a 1 or 2 ounce jigger. Fill an ice bucket with ice and leave out a chilled bottle of Prosecco.  Guests can measure and pour their own cocktails with ease!

Cheers, friends! Happy New Year!

  • * I know it bucks the traditional ratio of a Negroni, but I like this drink with 2 ounces of Prosecco instead of 1.

    1. The sbagliato swaps the gin for sparkling wine! Sbagliato is Italian for “mistake/wrong” so this swap was very intentional. Happy drinkin’!

  1. Was “couch syrup” a typo that was intended to be “cough syrup”?

Either way, you’ve just invented a phrase that pretty much sums up my perfect idea of a treat. My idea of “couch syrup” would be a squeeze bottle of dulce de leche that I could inject directly into my mouth. Or maybe a liquefied sticky toffee pudding? Yeah, that would work.
