Five Good Things

catman

ย There are awesome things going on in my kitchen. ย Awesome things like… the oven is off. ย Awesome things like… the dishes are clean. ย Awesome things like… the cat’s new haircut means that there’s generally less cat hair everywhere. ย Ps. ย The cat learned this over the shoulder pose from the Olsen twins. ย Demure.

Since all I’m eating is popsicles and fried rice, let’s talk about inspiration. ย Have you seen the Internet? ย It’s all over!

The Everygirlย is a new site by two excellent Chicago-living ladies, Danielle Moss and Alaina Kaczmarski.ย ย Everygirl is a really nice place to land. ย They have career features and interviews with women trying their best to live their dreams (Check out this feature with the Blogshop ladies). ย Everygirl also features fashions spots and health tips… but I super love that they have a finance section. ย It’s not often enough that people tell me to chill out on my credit card and to think once or twice about a Roth IRA… right!?

I still just swoooon major for this line of jewelry fromย Unearthen. ย Its design is exactly like its name: ย you know, from the ground. ย I’m not sure how much longer I can live without this watch. ย In reality the answer is… probably a long time, but I love it!

beach coffee

Have you seen theย 365 Days of Hand Letteringย Project by Lisa Congdon? ย It is inspired and inspiring. ย It makes me want to pick up a pen and write kind words reminding myself to be kind to myself. ย I can be such a jerk to myself sometimes. ย … but maybe that’s just me.

If you’d let me snoop around your medicine cabinet… I would. ย If you let me gawk at your shoe closet (or shoe pile)… I’d root through that. ย If you’d let me admire your silverware drawer… I’d totally be all over that. ย I’m nosey. ย Closet Visitย was made for me. ย Closet Visit goes deep inside the closets of beautiful and talented women. ย The site will make you love and hate. ย Love = the beauty and talent of the women that surround us. ย Hate = our own shoe closet (pile).

books and dinner

I’m deep into a big pile of cookbooks (and a small cup of chocolate covered sunflower seeds). ย I’m going to make you some ice cream from the Savory Sweet Life cookbook. ย I’m totally making pancakes from Clinton St. Baking Company cookbook, and oooooh the Cupcakes and Cashmere book. ย Heart! ย It feels like such a treat to browse through all these books. ย It’s like vacation on the couch.

I love you, I do! ย Enjoy this day!

xo Joy

  1. Beautiful cat! Cats can totally pose can’t they. They practice while we are sleeping I tell you :)

I also love the Everygirl website. My favourite features are those involving inspiring entrepreneurial women and their stories of getting/making their dream jobs. What an inspiration!

I am a total snoop as well so Closet Visit is totally for me as well! Gives me so many ideas that it’s crazy!

Thanks for sharing your favourite things of the moment! Made me smile.

  2. hi joy,
absolutely love your blog (though it’s much more than that, it’s a world of its own… and a wonderful one at that…) and i keep on referring people to it. i just became a new mom so hardly any time to bake, though much time to fantasize about sweets…
Anyway, i think it was you that wrote and gave a link to a gold ring on etsy. it had a single initial on it. i remember going into the site and liking it but i cant find the link. it was actually an israeli jeweler (i live in israel..). So, my sisters birthday is coming up and i would like to check out her jewelry again. Do you happen to have the link? thanks so much!
    Noa

  3. Hi Joy, our cats are doppelgangers. How do you do the cut? Did you bring him to a groomer? Thanks!

  4. Your blog is so inspiring! Even more interesting are these funny updates and bits about your life in general. I checked out Everygirl and loved it. Thanks for sharing.

  5. I love seeing cats with that haircut. Mine has short enough fur that she won’t ever get it, but it is cute enough that I almost wish she was a long hair (while I’m at it, I’ll also wish that she was polydactyl so I could have even more cuteness).

  6. How to give a cat a haircut? My long-haired kitty is cranky that I keep trying to brush out his kitty hair clumps :(. He would probably need sedation for a haircut though….

Love your blog, you make me smile. Also, love the podcast – listen while I am walking laps around the track; the time goes so quickly and I catch myself chuckling <3

  7. I had never heard of the Closet Visit and now I’m obsessed. Such a cool site. I’m a new reader of Joy the Baker and I’ve totally fallen in love with your blog. Thank you for all the great recipe ideas!

  8. Love the cat photo. Have also really appreciated your insight into salted and unsalted butter and the packing of brown sugar. Would LOVE your opinion on the various types of flour and how to measure/weigh and using extra large or medium eggs rather than large eggs in recipes. Your blog is fabulous and absolutely inspiring!

  9. Closet Visit will probably make me hate everything about my wordrobe. My wordrobe is basically nonexistant. I don’t have a fashion sense what so ever.

But I do love flipping through all my cookbooks and flagging things that I love (and will probably never have time to make) Seriously, I’ve probably wasted like 3 oacks of sticky notes (all torn up so I can get the most use) to flag everything I like :)

  10. Oh my gosh, Closet Visit is awesome. Thanks for sharing! I love that it’s a mix of closest – not just ones that make me feel bad about myself!

  11. Gosh Joy. I love you. And your kitty. I’m sure he loves that haircut because it’s the warm season. Lucky you aren’t in Texas because it is HOTT (with a double T!) here!!!

  12. i would like to photoshop kitten with a venti starbucks coffee in paw and some big honking glasses. Totes Mary Kate. Totes. Turban would be a nice bonus. kkkkkkkkk bye.

  13. I have 3 cats and one of them gets a haircut every year. My friend comes over with her clippers and we sit outside, coax the cat over and she even holds still for about 30 minutes.

  14. I noticed kitty’s haircut yesterday. I too give my long-haired cat haircuts. It started out just in the summertime, but it has evolved into a year round thing cause his hair get EVERYWHERE if I don’t.

I have also come to the realization that I might read your blog/listen to podcast too much cause I had a dream the other day that we were friends and hanging out and it was awesome.

    Have a fabulous day!

  15. Joy–the picture of your cat is amazing! I have never thought to give my cat a haircut, but she’s a Maine Coon with an 80s-hair-band-member’s amount of hair.

  16. I totally get the snooping closet thing….Have you seen the feature on That’s what we said. They have one section where other bloggers share what’s in their purse or fridge. It makes me feel so nosy, but I have to read it anyway.

  17. I just snorted like a happy porker on seeing Jules’ haircut! Is the poor boy self conscious? Is he hating you so much right now? Whenever our cats have had to have even the smallest bit shaved for tests or whatever, they immediately sulk and refuse to acknowledge us until they have their dignity again!
(You wouldn’t find anything interesting in my shoe closet. I think it amounts to 1 pair of knee high boots (black), 1 pair or ankle boots (black), 1 pair of combat boots (black, from my Cadet Force days, 2 sizes too big), 1 pair of trainers (black), 1 plair of sandals (black) and a solitary pair of heels that have never been worn (those are also black).

  18. Your kitty is rockin’ that haircut! :) Made me smile…..One of my favorite things to do when I worked for a catering company was when we prepped in other people’s kitchens and had to find something in a cupboard or drawer.

  19. Oh, your cat! That is totally what I need to do with my Pocahontas-esque hair. Chop-Chop! Waist-length is so not working in the tropical summer heat. Florida frizz is the worst! Tell cat-man he is rocking that style (and the Olsen-twin-pose!) :D

  20. Love your website!

Regarding Unearthen, love the artsy pictures, but it seems like a lot of the jewelry is made with sharp points that could stab or scratch. I DO like that the jewelry designer(s) in this site are trying new things though. :-)

  21. i just gave my dog a haircut and he poses like that too.. such a diva. love this post! the hand lettering is brilliant. anddd always on the lookout for new cookbooks

  22. I LOVE Clinton St. Baking Co! I lived in NYC for 5 years and still believe their blueberry pancakes are the best ever. Oh. And you are adorable. Thank you for being so awesome.

  23. Every time someone says “Roth IRA”, I just shudder. Like that hyena in “The Lion King”, whenever someone mentions Mufasa. But I know I need to get on that. Will have to check that site out. And Closet Visit, because HGTV hasn’t hit upon that show idea yet.

  24. I love this picture of your cat! I’ll have to do this to my furry baby soon!! I don’t know why I didn’t think of this as the solution to my cat hair problems!!!

  25. I love all the links you just gave! I have so enjoyed the Everygirl and am too inspired to start letter writing. I am really intrigued about how to make ice cream. Do you need a specific machine to make it though?
Thanks for your blog and podcast! I’ve become a little bit obsessed. I’ve been listening to all the old episodes back to back and been inspired to bake, bake, bake!!! xxx

  26. I can completely relate to the happiness of a, temporarily, clean and tidy kitchen and a closed oven! I really enjoy the ‘recipe relief’ you provide by occassionally discussing non-food related goodness :) Love your blog.

  27. I want all of the things. I love your cookbook pile, your winter beach photo/experience, your lion/cat… Thank you for the inspiration you are to me (and many other people I’m sure:)

  28. I just ordered the Clinton St. Bakery cookbook an hour ago! Amazon, hurry up please!

And I did Blogshop with Bri & Angela – Photoshop is still way too over my head and I use LR, but hey, I tried :)
