Five Good Things

July 17, 2012 by Joy the Baker 81 Comments

catman

There are awesome things going on in my kitchen.  Awesome things like… the oven is off.  Awesome things like… the dishes are clean.  Awesome things like… the cat’s new haircut means that there’s generally less cat hair everywhere.  Ps.  The cat learned this over the shoulder pose from the Olsen twins.  Demure.

Since all I’m eating is popsicles and fried rice, let’s talk about inspiration.  Have you seen the Internet?  It’s all over!

The Everygirl is a new site by two excellent Chicago-living ladies, Danielle Moss and Alaina Kaczmarski.  Everygirl is a really nice place to land.  They have career features and interviews with women trying their best to live their dreams (Check out this feature with the Blogshop ladies).  Everygirl also features fashions spots and health tips… but I super love that they have a finance section.  It’s not often enough that people tell me to chill out on my credit card and to think once or twice about a Roth IRA… right!?

I still just swoooon major for this line of jewelry from Unearthen.  Its design is exactly like its name:  you know, from the ground.  I’m not sure how much longer I can live without this watch.  In reality the answer is… probably a long time, but I love it!

beach coffee

Have you seen the 365 Days of Hand Lettering Project by Lisa Congdon?  It is inspired and inspiring.  It makes me want to pick up a pen and write kind words reminding myself to be kind to myself.  I can be such a jerk to myself sometimes.  … but maybe that’s just me.

If you’d let me snoop around your medicine cabinet… I would.  If you let me gawk at your shoe closet (or shoe pile)… I’d root through that.  If you’d let me admire your silverware drawer… I’d totally be all over that.  I’m nosey.  Closet Visit was made for me.  Closet Visit goes deep inside the closets of beautiful and talented women.  The site will make you love and hate.  Love = the beauty and talent of the women that surround us.  Hate = our own shoe closet (pile).

books and dinner

I’m deep into a big pile of cookbooks (and a small cup of chocolate covered sunflower seeds).  I’m going to make you some ice cream from the Savory Sweet Life cookbook.  I’m totally making pancakes from Clinton St. Baking Company cookbook, and oooooh the Cupcakes and Cashmere book.  Heart!  It feels like such a treat to browse through all these books.  It’s like vacation on the couch.

I love you, I do!  Enjoy this day!

xo Joy

Beautiful cat! Cats can totally pose can’t they. They practice while we are sleeping I tell you :)

I also love the Everygirl website. My favourite features are those involving inspiring entrepreneurial women and their stories of getting/making their dream jobs. What an inspiration!

I am a total snoop as well so Closet Visit is totally for me as well! Gives me so many ideas that it’s crazy!

Thanks for sharing your favourite things of the moment! Made me smile.

    hi joy,
absolutely love your blog (though it’s much more than that, it’s a world of its own… and a wonderful one at that…) and i keep on referring people to it. i just became a new mom so hardly any time to bake, though much time to fantasize about sweets…
Anyway, i think it was you that wrote and gave a link to a gold ring on etsy. it had a single initial on it. i remember going into the site and liking it but i cant find the link. it was actually an israeli jeweler (i live in israel..). So, my sisters birthday is coming up and i would like to check out her jewelry again. Do you happen to have the link? thanks so much!

My Top 10 Peanut Butter Recipes

I haven’t felt like making meals at all this week.  I don’t even seem to have the energy to cobble together my usual lazy stand-bys: scrambled eggs and a carb, toasted.  Strangely, I’m also not allowing myself to order any expensive (and everything is expensive right now) takeout so… well, I’ll be eating bananas smeared…

One of my cushiest jobs of all time was being a reader for the Hallmark Channel. Every week, I’d drive down the 101 to the Valley to pick up a stack of books to review. The stories came in waves depending on what themes the producers were interested in, ranging from autism to cancer, and—of…
