Stop and Smell the Banana Bread

Let It Be Sunday, 65!

Let It Be Sunday!

I have lofty goals for this Sunday:  make the banana bread I’ve been trying to make for the last three days, keep daydreaming the BEST white chocolate macadamia nut cookies (I think there’s cream cheese involved), and polish off another round of Brunch Book edits.  Also… put some sun on my legs and find at least an hour to chill supreme in weekend vibes.

I hope your day is colorful and coffee-filled.

•  I was going to have a link to a Donald Trump story here, but I realized I couldn’t bear it and deleted it.  Outta here with all that.

The inside story of how Amazon created Echo, the next billion-dollar business no one saw coming.

•  Related:  We have to remember to shop local.  It about heart and soul and our cities.  Malls of America.

•  Why we love reality TV.  I write this as I’m currently and with much tardiness anchored into my obsession with Survivor.  The Pleasure of Their Pain

Jonathan Gold on LA’s food, anonymity, and thousand year eggs.  A great podcast on Food52.

How To Transition From Winter To Spring: a mental style guide.  A very lovely and helpful illustrated guide.

•  Now we know… two glasses is the ZONE.  Portraits after 1, 2, and 3 glasses of wine.

Did you order your Tesla.  Seems that everyone else did.  Geez.

How one man single handedly opened the only grocery store in the 9th ward.  This city with all its heart and soul.

•  Alexa Pulitzer has the very thorough, very extensive guide to New Orleans.

Boyfriends tried to do their girlfriends’ makeup.  You can guess how this turned out.  Things really start to get wonky at the eyeliner stage.

The most important words in a relationship.  Say whatcha mean. I mean… they aren’t the most loving words by any stretch, but this is Defcon 1.  (I just realized I don’t really know what Defcon means… here’s a definition.)

•  Pretty sure I had a jumpsuit just like this when I was six.  Pretty sure I want it again.

•  Very excited to cook from this beautiful and heartfelt book:  Tasting Rome.

•  This is my Spring power scarf.  Always with me.

•  Stop everything: Pineapple Purse.

 Pan-Crisped Deviled Eggs!

Happy day to you!

  1. I live for your “Let is be Sunday” posts. Even though sometimes Sundays get a little crazy and then Monday happens and now I’m reading it on Tuesday morning. I love the mix of culture, news, New Orleans, and baking. Does anything else matter? Cats, cats matter.

  2. ” Related: We have to remember to shop local. It about heart and soul and our cities.” But then you link to Amazon for the book-buying?

  3. Hey Joy! I saw on your snapchat feed that you made the banana bread in a skillet – can I follow the same recipe and use it in a skillet instead of a bread pan?

    Thanks!

  4. When I was a kid, I loved to watch The Jetsons, so it’s no surprise that I’m the consumer who happily buys technology and was an Amazon customer back when they sent out coffee mugs at Christmas as thanks for being customers (and The Echo is right up there on my wish list). But I’ve also watched the neighborhood stores disappear in every city that I’ve lived in, including New Orleans right now. It pains me each time a shop closes its doors, deadens something inside of me each time a new chain store (or bank – God, how many banks does a community need?!) pops up in its place. I always realize that we’re trading one way of life for another and it’s a struggle. Yes, I’m part of the problem, shopping for all of my general goods online, looking for the best price, while reserving my local shopping for the special stuff, the one of a kind stuff, the stuff that’s going to disappear right out from under me. I don’t have any real answers except to do what’s within my means, but I’m aware, so very aware, and I’m not sure I like where we’re headed.

  5. LOVE the wine portrait link. Two glasses definitely is the zone, laughing over here because I can relate.

  6. Of course living in SF (and my sissy in Brooklyn)Malls of America really resonated with me. Everyone wants to live here or visit, because we are such ( if small 7 x7 miles) very diverse city. Every neighborhood has its own distinct character. If the city government doesn’t make an effort to keep this going, everyone loses! I’m really hoping Propositon J will protect our local family businesses. I think we should have rent control for businesses not just for renters. Congrats on your new home. Love New Orleans, but I wouldn’t be able to stand the weather. I will be casting my way south of SF, because I’m not a rich techie! Thanks for saying no to the Drumpf ” it was amusing at first, but now I’m avoiding all coverage if I can. Although the video with the free hugs guy was very enlightening. Thanks for another great Sunday read. ????

  7. My Echo is supposed to arrive tomorrow and I’m beyond excited. When they first launched it I thought it sounded creepy but now the whole idea of being about to say, “Alexa, play Serial” is intoxicating :D

  8. Hi! First off, I love you, seriously. You are my favorite ^_^

Secondly, I hate to do this, but I don’t know if you know or not, but you have a horrible banner add at the bottom of your page. it takes up almost a quarter of the screen and can’t be dismissed, super annoying :(

  9. The story about the grocery store in New Orleans is so inspirational. I really hope he, his wife and mother succeed.

  10. Sunday’s for me are for baking too – banana bread sounds good! Wish I could get some sun on my legs but Minnesota is still shaking off Winter. We’ll get there eventually. Banana bread is as close to sunshine, right?

  11. I had a hankering to make banana bread too and my first ever loaf! Best of all it got devoured by kids and parents at brunch today. Well worth the bother of creaming the eggs and butter by hand (involving a torn spatula in the process.) Happy Sunday!

  12. Great collection of links. I really enjoyed the story about the Ninth Ward and I’m looking forward to making Jacques Pepin’s ” Pan Crisped Deviled Eggs”
Thanks for taking the time out of what I know must be a really busy time getting settled into your new place to share
Did you find your favorite dinner plate yet?

  13. Love this post. I had my first laugh of the day watching the makeup video. Read every nook & granny…thanks!

  14. I love that the Amazon CEO requested a song from Battlestar Galactica as the first song he wanted played on the Echo. That’s hilarious! What a nerd! (I say this with love because I am a nerd, though I’d probably have requested Nirvana or maybe Eddie Vedder playing the ukulele, personally)

  15. Such a great combo package of articles Joy – love the Malls of America. I’m in somewhat of a self-imposed news vacuum hiding from Trump coverage (dear God, make it stop), but have you seen the cover of the Boston Globe today? Enjoy your week…

  16. Nice compilation of articles. The order in which it is presented is appreciable. Banana bread recipe is simple yet healthy, the story behind Amazon’s Echo is inspiring. I could personally connect myself to the article “Malls of America”, it is very much essential to stress upon the importance of local shopping in a world where shopping in malls is a matter of pride than necessity. Great effort.

  17. I look forward to your Sunday posts each week. You never disappoint and thanks for dropping Trump this week. I’ve had enough. Loved to 2 glasses photo shoot. Enjoy your Sunday!

  18. Have a great Sunday too! Here it is sunny and expected to be 18 but unfortunate a cold wind. Still, good day for mowing our very long grass.
