White Shorts After Labor Day

Let It Be Sunday

Hello my friends! ย Welcome to another edition of This Is Your Life Sunday. ย Just look at you living! ย Take a little time to yourself! ย I’m really glad you’re here. ย Everyone insists on talking about the end of Summer and I say no! ย I’m still wearing white shorts and sunglasses despite the September calendar. ย No ‘Welcome back from Summer’ emails for me, please. ย I’ve been here in my Turn Down For What t-shirt for months. ย So…. there you have it.

The world continues to be a shaken up mish-mash of heartbreaking and beautiful things. ย Here’s what the week has for us:

โ€ข ย Inside the Failed Raid To Save Foley and Sotloffย is a heavy-sigh… to put it mildly. ย President Obama isย in search of a strategyย and not one bit of it seems easy of clear-cut.

โ€ข ย You know how hackers elbowed their way into the cell phone photos of celebrities and released a bunch of nude photos for all to ooogle at? ย That’s really rude and intrusive. ย Question: ย is aย women’s privacy is less important than male pleasure.ย  Does that question make you uncomfortable? ย Me too.

โ€ข ย Are we wired for negativity over good?ย  I think the answer lies in the fact that I more often rememberย theย negative blog comments over the positive ones. ย Dangit brain!

โ€ข ย Are you nerding out about Tuesday’s Apple announcement? ย Wait… are you already standing in line? ย Too soon. ย Too soon. ย ย The Verge compiled their thoughts on the new iWatch. ย Is it weird that the possibility of this makes me really nervous?

โ€ข ย On the flip side, how aboutย a distraction-free iPhone. ย There’s relief in there. ย Think about it.

โ€ข ย Aย Columbia student will carry around a mattress until her rapist is expelled. ย Statement meets art.

โ€ข ย I didn’t go to college right after high school and at the time it seemed like a really big deal to my family and friends. ย I eventually went to college in my 20’s when I had more of an idea of who I was and what I wanted to do. ย Mostly it’s about being true to who you are, even when people think you’re stone-cold craaaazy. ย How to skip college and thrive. ย Be true to you!

โ€ข ย Joan Rivers, we’re going to miss you. ย You were so much more than ‘who are you wearing’.

โ€ขย  I like my coffee like I like my men….ย What your coffee order says about you.ย

โ€ข ย 6 things the happiest families have in common. ย Dinner is a big deal.

โ€ข ย We’re about to be all-pumpkin-everything but before that happens, can we eat these Shawarma Nachos forever and ever?

Have a lovely Sunday!

I love you byeeee!

  1. So I’m late to the party here, but Joy, I wanted to say thanks for sharing such important issues. Every time you post, there is a recipe or a link that makes me think we’d get along swimmingly, but today in particular, I feel very lucky to see everything you share on this little corner of the internet. Thanks for being you, girl. For real.

  2. I’m no where near ready to let go of summer – I’m refusing anything fall related. It’s still only early september … no need to rush life, I say.

So much happy things for me to say about this post :
    – Family dinner … YESSS – I’m a huge advocate. It’s special.
    – Shawarma nachos …. YES YES YES – please, with a gold glass of rose water iced tea !

  3. Thank you for including the link to the girl wearing a mattress. While it sucks that it’s needed, I’m glad to see that sexual assault on college campuses is finally getting nationwide attention. Props to that girl for not letting them shame her into silence!

  4. JOY! thank you so much for the link! i will make you all the shawarma nachos you want forever and ever AND MAKE ALL-PUMPKIN-EVERYTHING! it’ll be a six course meal. nachos, pumpkin, nachos, pumpkin, nachos, you get the deal. i hope you had a splendid weekend!!!

  5. Not to be too heavy, but it’s so awesome to me to see articles about women’s rights popping up in your lists. I think this is maybe the most important issue for women of our generation, but so often people act as though it’s not an issue at all. It’s freaking awesome that as a boss lady with a platform, you’re putting this stuff out there. Love, love, love your work Joy.

  6. I’m really enjoying your Sunday posts– I actually have time to sit down and look through them on Sundays. thanks for taking the time to put them together! xx

  7. I love seeing a little glimpse of your home, as well as a round up of the most important bits of the internet. Also, I have often heard you describe your cat as a monster on the podcast, but blimey he is HUUGE! Part wild cat/lion/cheetah? x

  8. As always, love the terrific grab bag of links! You are the only site I can visit and have a burning need for an iWatch, to read more about political strategy, and to make shawarma nachos!

      1. Ah I think unless you were commenting as Openid above you have mistaken my response as being towards you not the commenter above: “And why does one take nude photos? Doesn’t the pleasure of at least one man enter into it?” speaking from personal experience and citing that opinion piece from the guardian (and maybe shouting out to lesbians here too) like Openid said it is a complex issue but I think it is a narrow view to suggest a naked image of a woman always is created in association with the pleasure of a man – another example would be the fascinating project here https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2014/sep/06/womens-breasts-laura-dodsworth-photography love the 101 yr old womans comments there too.

          1. phew – lol – I blame autocorrect (opened not openid) – thank you for the links, good to have a think on a Sunday. Do read about the boobs if you get the chance – that article blew my mind yesterday x

  9. Hey joy, I just wanted to thank you for posting some great thought-provoking world articles on here lately. I’ve seen some but others are new to me and I have loved your balance of the real world and all this awesome food you blog about. That post on journalists’ risky jobs last week really was fab!

    Keep at it girl!

  10. Having dinner together as a family and with friends is a great way to stay connected. To do so you need comfortable chairs around the table. I have the same chairs you do and love them, they are so comfortable.

  11. Everyone raise your glass and make a toast to a blog that always makes the glass half full and not half empty. Always stay positive. Have a wonderful Sunday. Paulette
