The Size of Guilt

Let It Be Sunday, Oct 2014

let it be sunday

[G]ood morning, friends!  This might be too many sprinkles for a Sunday morning.  A little aggressive.  I’m in Vermont this weekend teaching people how to make pie at the King Arthur Flour Baking Education Center.  The air is crispy and the trees are golden brown and otherwise drunk in love with Fall.  I’ll soon be back in New Orleans, back in my kitchen, back being tormented by cat and claw.  I hope your Sunday is mellow and more great than good.

•  This American Crime: Sarah Koenig On Her Hit Podcast “Serial”.  Have you listened!?  Riveting, obsessive storytelling.

•  The Laborers Who Keep Dick Pics and Beheadings Out Of Your Facebook Feed.  That’s has got to be exhausting.  Also… thank you.

•  The Making of the Warrior Cop.  Why we saw what we saw in Ferguson.

•  Two teenage girls run away from their Colorado home to join ISIS.  Really, tho?  The Colorado-to-ISIS itinerary.

•  The Three Sizes of Guilt.  This is quite real, concise, and accurate.

•  12 Weekend Habits of Highly Successful People:  stillness, hobbies, and priorities.

•  When Introverts Should Avoid Coffee.  Thanks for the tips, yo.

•  Persimmon Prosciutto and Brie Grilled Cheese.  Let’s just eat all the persimmons.  ALL.

•  The number of eggs a woman has predicts heart attack risk.  Cool… what else should I stress out about besides EVERYTHING!?

•  The World’s Youngest Female Billionaire.  Dropped out of college.  Revolutionized the world.  Tale as old as time.

•  Monica Lewinsky helps to put an end to cyber bullying.  Better than making purses.

•  Why Every Newborn You See On Facebook Is Wrapped In The Same Baby Blanket.  Good to know.

 •  A Kid Crying Over a Cat. “Let it all out…”

Happy Sunday!

  1. Serial!! Beyond obsessed, though I feel guilty sometimes because I’m involved like it is fiction, but this is definitely real life.

  2. There are never too many sprinkles.

Now that I think about it, that might just be my new life philosophy. Joy, such an inspiration.

  3. I am absolutely OBSESSED with Serial!! My mom and I devour each new episode and then immediately wish another was available. It’s genius! Then again, I’d expect nothing less from the makers of This American Life.

  4. I wonder if anyone else thought that “the number of eggs a woman has” meant the number of eggs she eats, not the number in her ovaries! LOL! Ooops!

  5. Love your site….. have made many of your wonderful recipes and enjoy your rhetoric and sense of humor……..need to say that first. I am not a defender of anything going on in Ferguson, because I don’t live in Ferguson, so I don’t know what’s really going on, except what the media reports. Since September 11, 2001, cops have been expected to be the frontline in the protection of civilians from terrorists…..a double edged sword. While I enjoy many of the articles in “Mother Jones”, I acknowledge that they are not the most unbiased source of information and all that it implies. Interesting article, though!

  6. Wow that content moderation piece is terrifying. Making me think using Facebook etc is akin to sweat shop stores and factory farmed chicken. Like the eggs/heart attack piece, I did not need more worry in my life!

  7. Just wanted to say: you have the best curated list of links each week. Really fascinating articles that I haven’t seen elsewhere. Loved the Wired article this week. Hope you keep it up!

  8. The fact that Warren Buffett plays the ukulele was worth the whole 12 Habits piece (though the rest was also excellent). P.S. you’re an introvert? For some reason, I’m shocked.

  9. I love King Arthur Flour and have made many purchases from them. I really like that if you have a question you can call them and they will put a baker on to answer any questions. I have called them a few times and they were really helpful. Wish I could be there participating in the pie class. I make pies, but getting a few more tips would be great.

  10. Joy, where are you getting your sprinkles? I cannot find any as colorful as yours! And, just a side note, I love your relationship with your Dad :)

  11. I really and truly love that you are one of the very few lifestyle bloggers who doesn’t ignore the real world. I love that I can beautifully curated, sometimes aspirational photos and food ideas here and also a link about ISIS, because that’s the world we live in and women care about both. Wish more bloggers would follow your lead.

  12. I love these posts so much! I even started doing my own version (I gave you full credit for the inspiration in my first posts last Sunday) Thank you for always providing great content & inspiration!

  13. Never too many sprinkles! I spent last evening eating pumpkin pecan praline pie (love it!) and obsessively listening to the newest episode of Serial. So good! It was awesomely fun getting to bake with you yesterday morning! xo, Jessica

  14. I love that image! I also loved the piece about the content-moderation “warriors” (my term, not the article’s). It’s a fantastic read that sheds light on another service that we as a society have grown to take for granted, like garbage pick-up and who knows what else. A very worthy read!
