Worth it for the muffin hack alone.

Let It Be Sunday, 391!

Hello friends! We’ve made it to where we’re supposed to be this morning.

Everytime I move to a new place I forget about the learning curve. The subtle but constant reality of always seeming to be in the incorrect lane, exiting the wrong driveway, or having to take another lap around the grocery store looking for canned pumpkin (it’s on the end caps – it’s October, after all). In return for all of my extra efforts, I live across the street from VERY GOOD soup dumplings so it’s all worth it. And Will – I get to live just down the way from Will, too.

Aside from being perpetually lightly lost, I’m also slowly learning to root for the Astros.  The Dodgers fan in me has learned that life is full of surprises.

This week our Sunday reads are a list of things I’m listening to and hope to eat.  Sweaters only, y’all.

I unabashedly love a “y’all.”  Y’all, The Most Inclusive Pronoun (The New York Times)

A little understanding and appreciation of the punching bag of Halloween candy:  In Defense of Candy Corn. (The Atlantic)

Radio Cherry Bombe has some great episodes always but especially as of late and recently I’ve really enjoyed this interview between Kerry Diamond and Crate & Barrell CEO Janey Hayes. (Radio Cherry Bomb)

•  These were the cookies of the Internet this week because we bake to new Taylor Swift albums.  It’s just a thing. ( Joy the Baker, Buzzfeed, Spotify)

•  This recipe for Stewed Black Eyed Peas with Collard Greens in going on the menu next week. (Butter Be Ready)

My friend Kristen is an incredibly inspiring and informative gardener and just watching her clean her tools is a soothe.  Anyone want to watch me do the dishes? (Instagram)

•  Late one sleepless night this past week I found myself in bed listening to Radiohead’s OK Computer. I was 16 again. It is Whole Album Autumn. What are your favorites? (Spotify)

•  The latest issue of Joy the Baker Magazine will have you SET for this holiday’s baking adventures and I’d love for you to have it! (Magazine Shop)

This time last year I was training for the half marathon. This year I am not BUT I will be out on the course in Houston with a sign cheering for everyone. The Internet is filled with sign ideas but I bet you have some good ideas too. (Pinterest)

This muffin pan + rice trick blew my mind and yes, of course I’m trying it on my next batch of blueberry muffins.  (The Kitchn, Joy the Baker)

My next read is this spook of a book: When She Returned by Lucinda Berry (Bookshop.org)

In case you missed it on JtB, Abby wrote about her favorite Trader Joe’s items and I absolutely used it as my grocery shopping list this week. Also – do not miss the comment section. We all ride hard for Joseph. (Joy the Baker)

•  I’m ready for everything I wear to be sweater material. (American Eagle)

Have a lovely Sunday, friends!

My love to you.

xo Joy

  1. My sign that got the most laughs at this year’s Chicago Marathon was “Dating is worse.” It was inspired by my friend saying she’d rather do a long training run then go on another bad date. :)

  2. Not gonna lie … stumbled into the local drugstore late the other night, and literally *squealed* when I saw your face shining out from the magazine rack. Security guard gave me quite the look!
Thanks for bringing your *joy* up north – from Vancouver, BC Canada

    1. May I ask which store? I’m in Vancouver as well – I just went to order the magazine from the online store but discovered that shipping alone went from $4USD in 2021 to $18USD this year :( I love Joy but after exchange that’s a spicy magazine

  3. Totally agree that y’all is a perfect word.

Also very on board with Whole Album Fall. My favorite band (including 16yo me) is the Red Hot Chili Peppers and they pulled a T.Swift and dropped TWO new albums this year! Loving listening all the way through!

  4. OK computer is an album that holds up today with ease. It was my college soundtrack and I still know what song is coming next before they current one ends.
    Love your website ??

  5. I’m so glad you are coming around to our Astros! The team is made up of such good guys, with amazing stories, and contribute so much to the community. It’s hard not to root for them when you know their stories and the truth of how hard they work for the city.

Can not wait to try to the rice hack. It has me intrigued!

I’m sure you’ve already done so, but Kuhl Lipscomb at the holidays is really fun to walk around.

  6. Tj”s Unexpected Chedder is the best…comes in a block or shredded. Also, Pumpkin Butter at this time of year. I stock up so I can enjoy it all year long. The one pound chocolate blocks are great for baking and ganache making. It comes portioned out into 40 “blocks”… 5 little blocks equals 2 ounces. I freeze those segements and pull them out to chop for baking or ganache. The quality od TJ’s chocolate is great.
Finally, the best muffin hack is baking the muffins for the first 5 minutes @425. Turn the oven down to 350 and bake the remainider of the time. The initial pop of heat causes the muffins to really have a wonderful high dome.I also always use the tulip aking cups which allows me to fill the cups to the top without spillage. It is also a pretty presentation every time.

  7. Ahh, Suday morning, a cup of tea and Joy! I watched an older episode of Food Network Christmas cookie bakeoff show, and there you were!! It’s so fun to see you on TV. Your comments about a new home got me wondering about your home in New Orleans. I’m thinking I read that you still have that home and your new home. Is that correct? Have a terrific week!

    1. Yes – it’s about time Food Network airs that old episode of the cookie challenge. Ha! I love it. And yes, I still have my home in New Orleans (I’m actually here as I type this) and spend lots of time in my apartment in Houston.

  8. I was just talking about that Radiohead CD. I remember exactly where I was and fell in love with it immediately. I heard one song and HAD to go out the next day and buy the CD. Back in the good old days we couldn’t just listen to songs anywhere or on out phones. lol

  9. I don’t hate the idea of watching you do dishes; maybe it will inspire me to finally do mine. It’s truly one of my least favorite tasks to get started on because it feels so sisyphean – no matter how many dishes i do the minute I want to eat again I’ll be behind. Insert sobbing emoji here.

    1. Best use of sisyphean! (Listening to Stephen Fry’s audiobook ‘Mythos’ while I take a stab at my dishes…)

  10. I just picked this up today at a local Tops. I even took a picture haha. I will share it on Facebook tomorrow afternoon. Thanks so much for all the great recipes!
