Hello, friends!
What do you have cooking this fall? I’ve been twiddling my thumbs waiting for the weather to finally change so I can bust out all the chili recipes and cozy sweaters. On the personal goals front, I’ve been trying to do more activities on my own. This afternoon I’m going on my first solo hike; and I’m using that term loosely because I will most likely be walking at a moderate clip on a safely populated path. But you catch my drift. Below are a few more things I’m looking forward to and enjoy your weekend!
Xo,
Toby
• A girlfriend and I are going to see Paul Cauthen in Wilmington, North Carolina later this month and I can’t wait to explore a new town. Please let me know if you have any food recs for us! (YouTube)
• I’ve been wearing this accessory-holding-accessory for purely utilitarian reasons—cause I never have pockets—and it always gets at least five compliments per wear from my first grade students. I now need more pops of orange in my life. (Amazon)
• Here’s a perfect poem by Dorianne Laux for your autumn morning. (Poets.org)
• My kids are going to go bonkers for An Abundance Of Beasts, a medieval bestiary generator. And, you know what, so will I. (itch.io)
• I’m excited to both read Zadie Smith’s new book and listen to this interview. What a goddess. (Talk Easy)
• If you’re looking for another pod to listen to on one of your fall walks, I loved Rabbi Sharon Brous’s powerful thoughts on her father and giving the gift of attention. (Apple)
• I usually throw shade on pumpkin spice but, lately, I’ve come around to admitting the simple pleasures of being a Basic B*tch. So Joy’s Pumpkin Muffins are at the top of my baking list this fall. (Joy the Baker)
• October is the best month of the year for those of us with a sweet tooth, and now we have a new candy shop to visit. Candy junkies unite. (Nashville Scene)
• Woody Guthrie’s list of New Year’s resolutions are, of course, meant for January. But I’m using it as a beautiful reminder to stay consistent with the basics. (Open Culture)
• On the entertainment front, I can’t wait for Cat Power’s new album, All the Light We Cannot See on Netflix, and Killers of the Flower Moon. (Domino Music, YouTube)
• And, finally, it’s time for me to read up on the badassery of Iranian human rights activist, Narges Mohammadi. (NPR)

Wilmington has a lot of great restaurants but Flaming Amy’s Burrito Barn and Indochine are my favorites! I went to college in Wilmington and whenever we visit, we always stop back in at these spots. Wilmington is beautiful, hope you enjoy!

I’m so excited for your first solo hike! I’m not sure what your version of hiking is but I go wandering all over San Diego, especially our gorgeous local park, Mission Trails, on my own all the time and haven’t really given it a second thought but it makes me realize we all have certain things we like to share. I made a list of things I wanted to do when I suddenly became single and I went to see a movie on my own, it was wonderful(and I somehow got the entire theater to myself!) but I concluded that I preferred that activity with a partner/friend.
I hope you’ll try hiking on your own a couple of times though, it is wonderful just to head out and enjoy nature on your own whenever you feel like it without having to persuade a partner or make arrangements with a friend.

Dockside restaurant is a classic Wilmington institution, but if you want something hipper head downtown – there are a plethora of options.

Okay, those muffins are pumpkin muffins NOT pumpkin spice! There is a difference. I feel like pumpkin spice is very BB. Pumpkin is for the masses. Plus, it’s a fruit so it’s healthy and that’s not just girl math.

I, too, am waiting to bust out the chili recipes! Not in the 90-degree heat here in LA though. :( And I can’t wait to listen to that Zadie Smith interview. Sam Fragoso is so stinkin’ good at what he does.

Thank you for the poem XO

Love the pumpkin muffin recipe. Can’t wait to try this out and will report back!
