I don’t much like the news this week. I don’t much like it at all. I’m tired of the Republicans yelling at me. I’m tired of hearing people dissect all of the yelling that they did, as if I needed some sort of translation. I’m preemptively shrinking away at the Democrats yelling at me because I don’t much want to hear or dissect that either. This election cycle is just… is it over yet? I’m not ambivalent I just don’t want all that’s being dished out. I want noise cancelling headphones and a trashy novel and really dark sunglasses.
Here’s some of the Internet for you Sunday:
• Why Democrats and Republicans Literally Speak Different Languages. Words and messages in these election times are very carefully crafted, with pointed partisan agendas woven into simple words. One side uses the word ‘alien’ while the other uses the word ‘immigrant’. Same concept, very different vibe. Sure, this is nothing new… but do we really need further divisiveness in that way we interact and speak of and to one another?
• My parents and two caregivers took care of my grandparents at the end of their lives. Those are hard years, months, and days. Lessons in love and patience, and grace and selflessness and seeing their care was a deeply powerful message growing up. Read this, about hospice caregivers: A Tender Hand in the presence of Death
• A very good weekend read! An excerpt from Dave Eggers’ new novel: Heroes of the Frontier.
• Is a child who is ‘old enough to ask for it’ too old to breast-feed? No. Yes. Wait… how about you decide what’s best for you and the person you made with your body? Sweet.
• It’s weird that we have to detail this sort of thing, but it’s important. ‘Important’ in a relative sense. ‘Important’ meaning it’s likely not all that important at all… you just don’t want to sound like an insensitive ass when other people are truly hurting. How NOT To Mourn A Deadly Terrorist Attack On Social Media
• Can Turmeric Heal Our National Inflammation? I mean… seems like an easy quick fix, right? Worth a shot.
• Let’s get out and play (and save on dollars): 9 Super Cheap Summer Friend Date Ideas
• Put your food brain on this combination. I think it has legs. Let’s experiment soon! Watermelon Tomato Margaritas.
• This Muffuletta Pasta Salad is ideal for your summer potluck excursions. Meat and cheese and carbs and olives… so, go!
• I think at some point in 2009 I vowed I would never wear a halter top ever again. I think I’ve changed my mind with this casual cool Amalfi Halter Dress from Ann Taylor. Real quick though… what do I do with these boobs in a halter dress? That’s what I haven’t quite figure out.
• This book is in my queue: Sweetbitter. Have you read it?
• I’m doing it up on Facebook Live and last week I made The Best Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies. Join me every Tuesday afternoon!
Enjoy your day! We’re in it, amen!

reading the opening line of your sunday post what came to mind is Dr. Seuss.
wished the news was as light and fun as his stories.

If you haven’t already bought that Ann Taylor dress, you should do it now! It’s an extra 60% off the sale price. Just use the money you saved to buy the strapless bra of your dreams. :)

Sweetbitter is so good! Grab some snacks, wine, and that book…you’re G2G…don’t judge me.
Sue from Pleasanton
I’ve found a nice strapless bra that works with my 38DD boobs. I’m 68, so need all the support possible. Hope you find one that suits you!
ellen king
just jumping on the tumeric bandwagon myself. The article is hilarious and encouraging.
Rachel
Joy, I was so with you re: halter dress but I bought that exact dress and wore it to a family wedding. LOVE it! I highly recommend. Enjoy!
Abby
I’ve been meaning to read Sweetbitter! I’m glad to hear all the positive reviews.

“I want noise cancelling headphones and a trashy novel and really dark sunglasses” is my favorite line I’ve ever read on your blog.

Joy, I love reading your blog. (I don’t always love reading the comments, people can be pretty harsh and cruel — — it would be nice just to show a little respect for each other). I want it to be over too – – there was so much ugly during the RNC (from the republicans and democrats), then we almost had a break, and now it’s starting again today and looks like a few more ugly days during the DNC. I’m going on vacation and disconnecting for a few days. Then, perhaps I’ll come home and cook up a few of your delicious recipes and add a couple of your interesting drinks, that can only help! Thanks for being fabulous!

Joy–I plowed through Sweetbitters. Its a great read for the summer. I especially enjoy a good book where I don’t ‘love’ the main character and Sweetbitters fits the bill. Hope you like it!

Joy–I plowed through Sweetbitters in a couple days. I always like a book where I don’t ‘love’ the main character necessarily!
Lizzie

Am I the only person who didn’t like Sweetbitter? It just felt claustrophobic and unpleasant; a long roller coaster ride of drug abuse. I just wanted Tess to eat some protein and sleep 9 hours a night, lol. Simone is a pretty great character though and it was beautifully written.
Pam
Joy, Check out this strapless bra from Third Love https://www.thirdlove.com/products/24-7-classic-strapless-bra . A bit pricey but if you don’t like it you have free returns. And their sizing app is ingenious! Good luck!
Nicole
Love you and the fact that you posted about hospice nursing and end of life care. You are my jam! Xoxo

loved your facebook live!! here’s a really serious question though…..will my beloved favorite PODCAST be returning????
lindsay e.
I wanted to get to know all of the characters in Sweetbitter more than we get to know them. I liked it and will probably read it again, to get to the bottom of those folks.
Love your Sunday posts, even when I wait til Monday to read them. xo

We knew a kid who yelled “Boob!” every time he wanted breast milk. Most of us thought that meant he was too old for it, but obviously his parents felt differently.
Kelly
I’m experiencing serious cognitive dissonance between the breastfeeding link and the mourning link. The message of the first is to live and let live and the second is entirely opposite – judgmental and mean.
joythebaker
You’re not wrong.
Lauren B
The best breastfeeding advice I heard was – “as long as both mother and child are happy.” We made it to 11 months before my supply gave out and had circumstances been different, I would have been quite happy to go another 6 months, at least. It’s personal, and definitely one of those things that I wish there wasn’t a public forum for- but that seems to be part of parenting in the US these days.
That pasta salad looks amazing and I’ve been searching for the perfect recipe. Might have to give it a go this week.
Kat
Joy – thanks for that first paragraph. I think a LOT of people are doing yelling, on both side of the aisle, and unfortunately it means that very few people are listening because most of us can’t stand the noise any longer. We need a lot more listening, but to do that we have to be able to hear.

Won’t discuss politics today. Just boobs. With my boobs, sundresses, spag staps, halters: just never. Ever. Braless? Just never. Okay, one word about politics: Bourbon. Hugs, Diane

As a regular reader, I feel alienated by your comment regarding Republicans. Of course it is not for me to say what should be kept on/off your blog, but I humbly submit that perhaps there is a better or different forum, other than your food blog, to share your comments regarding the Republican party. I truly appreciate coming to your blog and enjoying a neutral forum where I may appreciate your talent and passion!
joythebaker
I humbly submit that both sides are yelling and it’s all a bit too much for me.
Janabelle
Thank you! You are 100% correct, Joy! It’s all a bit much for me, too.
Chrissy
I often have to ask “what can I do with these boobs” in every outfit. Life is hard.
Sasha Lindberg
As a mom who breastfed for, ahem, a long time….Thank you for that sweet article. It made me laugh. Being a mom just has to involve a certain amount of humility and a decent dose of “mind your own f-ing business”. I didn’t PLAN on nursing a three year old, but I did what works for us, I encourage other moms to do the same. And worry less about whether it’s ok.
Rhonda T
Joy, here’s your halter top/boob solution: https://www.target.com/s/adhesive+bra Not something you’d want to wear all the time, but perfect for the occasional backless, sleeveless, summery confection!
Bryony Owen
I love the article about hospice nurses. My mum is a hospice nurse and she’s truly one of the most inspirational people I know. The work she and the other hospice workers do is incredible.
Kate
Bryony, cheers and hugs to your mum. My close friend’s mother just passed away Friday surrounded by her daughters and wonderful hospice nurses. A few years ago, another friend lost her mother to cancer with a lot of support from hospice. I am so glad there are such wonderful people out there working hard to bring love, comfort and dignity to death.

“Summer Fried Date Ideas”? Oops!
joythebaker
That n is very important.
Amy
Sweetbitter is totally delicious, you will love it!
Sarah
I absolutely loved Sweetbitter too.
socgrrrl
Haha. I feel the same way about halter dresses. :) I’m going to have to think on the watermelon-tomato margarita..but, I think it could work!
Karen
The dress is great. Maybe a halter dress is in my future. I will go to Amazon to get the book! Thanks for the recommendation. I know you need to watch the Dems convention! We all need to see the contrasts before November. The shouting is getting to me too. I actually went into another room for parts of the Republican one. The sound was overload on my tiny brain. Thanks for more informative posts.
Gayle
I usually stay away from politics but I would not refer to the repubs as yelling when Hillary is incapable of speaking at less than 2000 decibels and what she says are usually lies . We better wake up to what’s going on in this country and quit acting like we are safe , secure , and economically stable , quite the opposite . Maybe trump is not your guy but he is committed for the people unlike the corrupt democrats . Btw the cookies look amazing .
joythebaker
Committed for the people.
Mary
Hillary is committed to herself!
Tisha
Maybe we can have him committed…you know, for the people. :)
grapeslick
Yep. Gayle, realize your reflexive aversion to Hillary could be leading you in the direction of a sociopath- is it that important you stay away from her? Important enough to abort the entire country?
Kathy Mader
Well said, Gayle.
Rose
Thanks for starting my Sunday’s off so wonderfully Joy! Just walked the Hospice journey with my dear Mother-in- law and saw the love, care and compassion of these wonderful women and men. Thanks for
suggesting this read. We all need to be prepared in a positive way.
Lori
Love your blog! Look forward to each post.
sheila
Sweetbitter was really good, easy reading but thoughtful too, made me kind of sad..let us know how you like it
Emily @ Life on Food
I want to read that book too. Hopefully I will get it in with my summer reading.
Deb
A dress should make you *feel* as marvellous as you look and an uncomfortable underwear situ might detract from that. Feel marvellous!
Happy Sunday :-)
P.S. 8 weeks til I come to New Orleans for a visit. Can. Not. Wait.
Amy
Lots of stuff to check out on a lazy Sunday. Thanks Joy

Sweetbitter was a great read! It reminded me the slightest bit of Great Gatsby, and the way she describes the wines made me taste them in a whole new way. It’s an excellent candy read.
