The Sunday Five On Math, Rumors, and Banana Bread Syrup | 10.18.26

Friends, hi and welcome to another fine Sunday!

Here’s this week’s five. Good luck not crying about math… I’m serious.

•  On the list of things to make SOON very soon is this Coconut Braised Beef to be served with sticky rice, some sort of fresh green herby salad and lime.  Oh also! While we’re on OPFB (Other People’s Food Blogs), I made Quin’s Banana Bread Syrup in the few minutes John tolerated his baby swing last Thursday and it is INCREDIBLE in coffee.  Punches way above its weight / would be exceptional on vanilla ice cream.

•  The last thing I expected this week was for a NYT Daily podcast episode about math to leave me in tears. See: When A.I. Comes for Your Purpose in Life.  It feels like we’re fighting for our slow, bumbling, curious, weary, tender little souls. I also played this song for John this week and of course I cried about it.

•  These two New York Times pieces have been rattling around together in my brain this week. One looks at the years-long fallout after an influencer amplified serious, unverified accusations about the F-Factor diet (An Influencer’s Punishment is a Pinned Instagram Post ); the other is written by a professor who was falsely accused of orchestrating a quadruple murder by a TikTok tarot reader (A TikTok Tarot Card Reader Accused Me of Murder. My Life Turned Upside Down.). Very different stories with one question: what happens when the internet decides a story is true before anyone bothers to find out if it actually is?

•  Current drink fixation: an extra tall glass filled with filtered water, coconut water, and a pineapple Beam Glow packet. So good!

•  I’ve been thinking about holiday gifts for my girlfriends. I tend to get all my gals the same gift as… I dunno… shopping for everyone individually is just overwhelming. I also go for a useful gift – something that they might now splurge on for themselves. This year I’m thinking of these quilted travel jewelry cases from Etsy and these and these little jewelry packing pouches tucked inside for extra organization.

That’s our five. What’s on your mind today!

xo Joy
