Let It Be Sunday, 255!

January 26, 2020 by Joy the Baker 7 Comments

Hello friends and welcome to your Sunday!  I’m keeping it short this week since it’s been a long week and I’ve promised to live a life off of the computer this weekend.  I hope this finds you happy and well, with a good amount of time for yourself today (if you’re into that sort of thing).

Here’s a short list of what I’ve read this week.  As always, take only what you need.

•  Please know Ella Baker . (The New York Times)

•  The Prison Inside Prison. (Texas Observer)

•  This week’s long read is a difficult human story: Her Sorority Sister Suspected She Was Pregnant. What Did Emile Weaver Know? (Elle)

•  An essay for our times: My Life as Shopping Cart (The Believer)

•  Cats have have a little sausage and senators can have a little milk while speaking.  (The Cut)

•  This is fully and completely bonkers:  Slow Roasted, Twice-Fried Porter House Steak.  (Bon Appetit)

•  I’ve been furiously googling ideas for Mardi Gras outfits and these removable epaulettes caught my eyes.  The tutorial isn’t super extensive but I bet we can figure something out! What are epaulettes?  In two words: shoulder thingies. (More Better Blues)

•  Let’s let Chani tell us about ourselves this Aquarius season.  (Oprah)

•  Join us at The Bakehouse for a jam making workshop with Jamboree Jam this spring!  One of the most lovely things about living in the south is early Spring strawberry season. Join us!  (Eventbrite)

•  Jon made Pizza Chili served in garlic bread rolls so… game over.  (The Candid Appetite)

•  One year ago this week. (Joy the Baker)

•  Two years ago this week. What’s crazy is that I mention my friend Cara Nicoletti in both posts! (Joy the Baker)

Have the most lovely Sunday!

My love to you.

xo Joy

Wow! The article on solitary confinement was extremely sad. Even though they have committed crimes my heart ached for them and their families. Just the thought of being isolated for so long with just your own thoughts and no human connection is just mind blowing. I am amazed at how people actually survive years and years of it. I say “survive” lightly because it sounds like it causes a lot of mental health issues in the end. Thank you for sharing this and bringing attention to this issue.

The steak recipe is bonkers good! But obviously shouldn’t be consumed more than once per year!

    Joy,
Thank you again for these often illuminating, frustrating and yes, disturbing articles. Heavy hitting story regarding Emilie Weaver (ELLE); so much deflection, finger pointing and willful ignorance without much self-reflection in all parties involved. Damn, the destruction denial continues to wrought is unbelievable. Life without the possibility of parole is in my opinion unbelievably cruel and far too harsh considering similar stories and circumstances result in no prison time. My goodness, as a country we have so far to go in educating and empowering our young women and men, but also, our nation as a whole when it comes to mental health issues and women’s health care.

Hi Joy, I spent 4 days in NOLA last weekend! What an amazing place, although I did feel the public drinking was a bit odd.
Would love to return some time! We stayed just outside the French quarter and pretty much Walked in that area only, and had some nice meals and 5 walking tours.
